The ESL Instructor will teach two daily ESL classes for adult refugee and immigrant students. The instructor will partner with learners from many different ethnic, religious, linguistic, and educational backgrounds to build their proficiency and confidence in English communication and empower them to function and thrive in their new American context. This is a grant funded position with an end date of June 30, 2025.
Compensation: $21-$23 per hour
Role & Responsibilities
    • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
    • Plan and teach two daily English classes for recently-arrived adult refugee and immigrant learners, utilizing program curriculum to build English communication skills for employment, community navigation, and social connection.
    • Classes will include virtual and in person options, with one evening class weekly.
    • Orient new students, track participation, and refer students for support services as needed.
    • Welcome and orient new volunteers, and connect them to students for 1:1 tutoring.
    • Provide ongoing support, coaching, and tracking for volunteers.
    • Participate in Resettlement Team meetings and trainings.
    • Manage student records in an organized and confidential manner, including attendance, testing records, and enrollment information.
    • Maintain close communication with students to promote their participation and growth.
    • Maintain close communication with other staff to coordinate effective service to students.
    • Ensure compliance with grantor funding through the North Carolina State Refugee Office,
    • Create client notes in Microsoft Dynamics and record individual client service data in the NC Refugee Information System database.
    • Collaborate with other WR Durham staff involved in teaching various classes to support the successful integration of newly arrived refugees.
    • Assist with team projects and related tasks as needed
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Independent worker and excellent problem solver
    • Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple duties
    • Attentiveness to detail, initiative, and a desire to learn
    • Flexibility to teach in-person and/or online, depending on student need each quarter
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
    • Advanced computer proficiency, including database management
    • Experience working in a multi-cultural, social service setting
Requirements
    • Mature and personal Christian faith
    • Committed to the mission, vision, and values of World Relief
    • Desire to serve and empower the Church to impact vulnerable communities
    • Able to affirm and/or acknowledge World Reliefs Core Beliefs, Statement of Faith, Christian Identity and National Evangelicals For the Health of The Nation document
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with people of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds
    • Bachelor's degree and TESOL/TESL/TEFL certification
    • At least two years' experience teaching English as a second language
    • Familiarity with refugee resettlement programs and processes

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
•General office setting. World Relief also offers hybrid and remote schedules for limited positions.
•Great lengths of time working on computer, reading from computer screen, entering information, standing at copier or fax machine, and some time on the phone or in virtual meetings may be required.
•Year-end archiving activities involve repeated lifting and bending.
