The anticipated hiring range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00 per hour. Hiring offers will be determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience. POSITION SUMMARY

The Safety Supervisor provides leadership and supervision and ensures the efficiency and effectiveness of shift personnel. This includes but is not limited to training, planning and directing the work of Safety Officers and Dispatchers on their assigned shifts.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the Safety Officers and Dispatchers on the assigned shift by ensuring all staff are fit and prepared for duty. Assigns tasks and duties and ensures tasks and duties are completed as required.
  • Completes the daily work schedule for members of the shift, maintains attendance records, monitors time sheets to ensure accuracy and authorizes leave. Ensures that the oncoming shift is sufficiently staffed prior to authorizing the current shift to end its tour of duty.
  • Prepares annual performance evaluations for assigned employees, develops performance improvement plans as needed, documents corrective actions and issues commendations when commendable service is observed or reported.
  • Monitors email and ensure any requests for Campus Safety services occurring on the shift are handled in accordance with established procedures. Reviews incident reports and daily activity logs generated by officers assigned to the shift.
  • Conducts a shift briefing for personnel by communicating information from other supervisors and the previous shift that is relevant to the current shift. Ensures changes in policy and procedure are communicated, understood and followed on the shift.
  • Assists with campus security including but not limited to, conducting visual surveys to determine unsafe areas, conducting injury site inspections, making interior and exterior light reports, alerting individuals to incorrect use of equipment, inspecting fire prevention and fire-fighting equipment and checking building doors and locks.
  • Provides and coordinates field training to newly hired Safety Officers, assures that shift personnel maintain required certifications and attends scheduled trainings.
  • Contributes to the overall success and morale of the Campus Safety Department by adhering to college policies, the Department’s Procedures Manual and performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned in a professional manner.
  • Maintains public safety on campus by enforcing all college rules, regulations and policies. Responds to medical emergencies, security alarms, traffic accidents and other campus emergencies.
  • Acts as Incident Commander, as required, until such time as a higher authority arrives on the scene.
  • Performs all duties of a Campus Safety Officer and maintains familiarity with all dispatch operations.
  • Attends meetings and seminars and may be asked to present material on safety and other topics relevant to the interests of campus safety and security. Attends meetings with other college staff, faculty or students to present information or participate in discussions.
  • Stays current through self-directed professional reading, develops professional contacts with colleagues, attends professional development courses and attends training and/or on-line courses as required by the Director – Campus Safety.
  • Assists the Director – Campus Safety and Human Resources with interviews/evaluations of candidates for Safety Officer and Dispatcher positions.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience in security/law enforcement or a minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a safety/security officer and demonstrated ability as a lead/officer in charge of a shift.

Licenses:

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License.
  • New York State Security Guard license.
  • Ability to be certified in basic First Aid and CPR.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Ability to make decisions in stressful and/or dangerous situations.
  • Knowledge of Incident Command System.
  • Excellent customer service and conflict resolution
  • Strong service orientation and demonstrated ability to work in a diverse, multicultural community.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills. Must have demonstrated ability in organizational, time management, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive issues with confidentiality and discretion.
  • Must have a proven, consistent track record showing the ability to work with all levels within an organization.
  • Strong computer experience, which must include abilities to work effectively with MS Office suite products, i.e. Word and Excel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work overtime on nights and weekends as required by business needs.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb stairs, bend, stoop, reach and stretch for duration of shift.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces including wooded areas of the campus.
  • Regular work requires a great deal of sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be able to work outdoors, sometimes in extreme temperatures.
