Position Description

When Assigned as a Truck Driver: Work involves driving a heavy duty truck which requires a CDL (commercial Drivers License) to pick up, transport and deliver materials and equipment to and from work sites. Work involves the execution of specific rules, regulations, or procedures. Employee is responsible for the efficient and safe operation of an assigned truck and for performing or scheduling its preventive maintenance and repairs. When Assigned as a Truck Driver Crew-Leader: When operating a truck as a crew-leader, work involves driving a heavy duty truck which requires a CDL (Commercial Drivers License) to pick up, transport and deliver personnel, materials and/or equipment to and from work sites. Work also involves the responsibility of overseeing a small crew of skilled and/or unskilled employees engaged in manual labor in maintenance or construction activities in maintaining, repairing and cleaning of public facilities such as parks and ROW (right of ways), roads, streets and other areas. Work also involves participating in the work and performing the more skilled tasks as the lead person of the crew. When Assigned as a Truck Driver or Truck Driver Crew-Leader: The employee is responsible for the efficient and safe operation of an assigned truck and for performing or scheduling its preventive maintenance and repairs. The work involves execution of various or variable procedures or work processes and the employee exercises discretion in determining procedures in carrying out assignments from written and/or oral instructions. After instructions are given, the work is usually performed with limited supervision. Work is reviewed by a supervisor who inspects the work while in progress or upon completion. A Truck Driver Crew-Leader position is distinguished from the Truck Driver Position by having the functional responsibility as a lead person and participant in a work crew of three to five subordinate employees. Such assignments however, do not usually include the full range of supervisory responsibility.

* Conducts pre-trip inspection on heavy duty trucks by checking for needed maintenance and ensuring components on trucks are in good working order prior to operating the truck.

* Reviews work orders and meets with supervisor to determine supplies, equipment and personnel needed on work site and oversees the loading of equipment to ensure it is properly secured prior to departure.

* Operates a heavy-duty truck in order to transport and deliver personnel, equipment, and materials to and from work sites.

* Prepares for work at work sites by ensuring safety equipment is worn, unloading supplies and equipment, ensuring flaggers are set up properly to direct traffic around the work site, and ensuring the safety of crew members on the work site.

* Oversees and assists crews performing activities such as maintaining/clearing right-of-ways, brush and trash removal, removal of dead animals from roads, patching and repairing roads, etc.

* Operates a refuse truck along assigned routes and ensures completion of garbage collection along the route by overseeing and assisting crews with the collection of refuse.

* Performs wrap-up activities at the conclusion of each day such as post-trip inspection, gathering tools, completing daily work sheets, and refueling equipment.

Requirements

* Class B Commercial Driver's License.

* Experience working with or around heavy trucks (e.g., street paving, flagging, refuse collection, etc.).

* Experience conducting a pre-trip inspection (checking fluids, brakes, tires, etc.
