About the Role:

Woodside would like to exploit Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) to deliver value to the business as DFOS technology has the potential to create a step change in the way Woodside monitors and optimizes production from its wells and fields. Woodside is looking for a subject matter expert in this area to lead interdisciplinary teams in the selection, installation, commissioning, and operational utilization (though not necessarily interpretation) of DFOS technology. This role will work closely with projects teams across the Company's portfolio to ensure DFOS technology is appropriately evaluated, selected, and deployed to maximize value. This role will report to the Engineering Manager within Technical Wells and is based in Houston, Texas.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provides DFOS technology strategic thinking and engineering expertise for interdisciplinary projects across the business, to identify and help determine the value of DFOS applications. Key integrator of technology across all disciplines.
  • Uses technical expertise and operational experience to actively participate and provide feedback in DFOS selection and design, impact on the completion / subsea tree, risk assessments, peer assists and assurance at functional reviews.
  • Integrates completion engineering, subsea engineering, subsurface, manufacturing and multiple service providers to ensure DFOS technology is successfully integrated into the topsides, subsea, and completion systems, and is successfully installed.
  • Provides leadership to project teams managing DFOS system design, manufacturing quality assurance, interfaces, integration, testing / validation, acceptance criteria, and installation.
  • Provides guidance to project teams regarding DFOS data acquisition, culling, transmission, and storage.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Promotes technical excellence by continuously improving, capturing and sharing lessons learned, and applying best practices across all global projects and applications.
  • Contributes to completion operations through discussions and problem solving as necessary.
  • Contributes to overall health of the organization through mentoring of engineers, input into training, and setting overall standards for technical excellence in DFOS technology.
  • Supports production units with guidance on any installed DFOS issues.
  • Identification & dissemination of new DFOS technology which positively impacts the business. This may include New Energy applications such as carbon capture, wind and geothermal, etc.
  • Represents Woodside on industry initiatives, committees, and events to contribute to knowledge and technology transfer impacting DFOS technology.
  • Reviews industry published standards and practices related to DFOS and advises on implementation.
  • Works on key temporary projects requiring completion input as needed for the business.
Skills & Experience:
  • 15 years technical proficiency preferably in a completion or subsea engineering role within the upstream oil and gas industry with significant DFOS experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of fiberoptic systems including optical fiber types and relative performance, optical splice technology, interrogator types and performance, optical switching and multiplexed systems, optical feed-thru systems and their integration into subsea trees, optical flying leads, determination of light budgets, optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) execution and interpretation, and data transmission and storage. Knowledge of subsea tree, ROV, and completions systems is desired.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline required (Petroleum, Mechanical, or related)
  • Requires strong technical and influence skills.
