Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for an OOI Community Engagement Manager to join the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.

The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Community Engagement Manager is responsible for managing and implementing engagement efforts to maximize the use of OOI data among the scientific community, resulting in increased OOI-based publications in peer-reviewed journals, citations of those publications, and funded awards to use OOI or infrastructure for scientific research. The Manager works in the OOI Program Management Office (PMO) and collaborates with the OOI Marine Implementing Organizations (MIOs) to identify and develop OOI related content and to amplify stories and messaging using channels including meetings, print, social media, email, and web.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain and lead the execution of the OOI Community Engagement Plan with detail sufficient to inform year-to-year activities as defined in the OOI Annual Work Plan.
  • Work to enhance and maintain the current OOI website incorporating science community feedback, statistics and other evaluation methods.
  • Regularly post on social media, email, and other content channels to strategically convey OOI’s mission and accomplishments to encourage broad use of OOI data in scientific publications and in the classroom.
  • Create and disseminate monthly newsletters and program announcements.
  • Develop video as another tool to disseminate information and news to the community.
  • Use professional conferences as venues to enhance engagement with the community.
  • Host virtual and “live” events for new and existing users.
  • Interface with counterparts in WHOI Communications and at the MIOs to leverage engagement opportunities and amplify content and engagement efforts.
  • Spearhead ongoing evaluation and reporting on OOI engagement efforts to identify trends and provide actionable insights and ideas.
  • Monitor and report on statistics including publications, citations, funded awards, website visitors, and social media reach.
  • Collaborate with counterparts at other NSF Large Facilities such as the National Ecological Observing Network (NEON) and with parallel efforts such as the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) to share best practices and lessons learned.
  • Interface with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to understand any constraints and to capitalize on parallel efforts, e.g., joint press releases.
  • Partner with educational efforts that capitalize on OOI data and infrastructure.
  • Publicize funding and other opportunities to potential users of OOI data, infrastructure and cyberinfrastructure.
  • Collaborate with OOI staff to expand and grow the diversity and number of scientific users of OOI data and infrastructure, including developing an OOI presentation and taking it to targeted institutions with underrepresented populations to increase the diverse use of OOI data.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s in a relevant field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience working in targeted community engagement or communications roles, preferably for a scientific or engineering organization.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with planning and implementation of strategies for websites, social media, and other communication mechanisms with strong content writing skills required.
  • Educational and professional background encompassing communications in Marine, Ocean or related field in Earth Science is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills, as well as oral and written communications skills required.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and an able collaborator with scientists, engineers, graphic designers, educators, and others.
  • Strong Computer skills is required, which includes expertise or familiarity with WordPress, Power Point, Word, Excel, and Outlook. Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and other design platforms.

Physical Requirements

Visual abilities to include near, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively, talk, travel, work with others, around others, and alone. Other physical tasks include occasional standing/walking.
