Woodland Public Schools - Substitute Paraeducator

Position Title: Substitute Paraeducator

Location: Woodland School District
Days/Hrs: varies depending on the job 
Pay Schedule: The current rate of pay is $20.25/hr for paraeducator substitutes, $21.09/hr for Diverse Support Program paraeducator substitutes.

Job Summary: To assist the superintendent toward the accomplishment of the mission of the Woodland Public Schools to assure that within a nurturing and stimulating environment each of our diverse students and graduates achieve literacy and appropriate core competencies and becomes a responsible and compassionate citizen. Substitutes are used as needed for instructional assistants, recess aides and paraeducators. This pool is also used for substitute secretaries.

Substitutes are required to complete the following SafeSchool trainings*:

  1. What Every Employee Must Be Told 
  2. Discrimination and Sexual Harassment
  3. Human Trafficking
  4. Homelessness
  5. Life-Threatening Allergies
  6. Diabetes Awareness
  7. Asthma Awareness
  8. Blood Pathogen Exposure Prevention
  9. Woodland Handbook
  10. HIV/AIDS Awareness
  11. Child Abuse: Mandatory Reporting
  12. Bullying: Recognition and Response
  13. General Ethics in the Workplace

* If these trainings have already been completed for another school district, completion certificates dated after August 1, 2023 will be accepted.

Qualifications:
  • 18 years or older
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Required to have completed one of the following requirement: Either (1) documentation to support an Associate’s Degree or transcripts to verify the comparable equivalence (i.e. 72 college quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited university, college, community college or business school), or (2) ETS ParaPro Assessment with a passing score of 455 (this can be taken at ESD 112 or at Lower Columbia College), (3) The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program: 65% or (4) Completed a Paraeducator 2 Apprenticeship Program.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with staff members
  • Ability to follow a variety of prescribed education strategies
  • Ability to independently complete assigned tasks
  • Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Strong communication skills
  • Be able to follow directions in a cooperative work environment
  • One year of job related experience working with students in an educational setting preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides instruction to students under the supervision of a certified teacher
  • Lead small group instruction utilizing specific curriculums
  • Assist classroom teachers as required with instructional programs including supervision of student activities and clerical support
  • Monitor student behaviors on all parts of the campus and make appropriate supervisory decisions
  • Supervise students and maintain a harmonious atmosphere by encouraging peaceful resolution of conflicts

Assistance provided may include the following areas: academic subjects, basic life skills, social skills, and other areas as assigned
    • Tutor or guide individual(s) or small group of students in various subjects (i.e. Reading, Math, ESL or other academic subjects). This will include assisting the teacher with developing lesson plans, preparing for tutoring sessions, working with students and maintaining records required by funding program
    • Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and record-keeping. Grade/correct papers and homework
    • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
  • Preference to bilingual

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people.
 
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
