Purpose

How does the position contribute to the success of the operation, division and company?

The lumber grader will oversee the verification of lumber grades on all lumber processed through the planer. The lumber grader will be working closely with the quality assurance coordinator and planer coordinator to ensure lumber stays within WWPA specifications.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities, Expectations and Performance Measures What measures or metrics will the individual be measured on and what level of performance is required?

Other duties may be assigned.

  • Verify quality of lumber and grade according to the WWPA standards.
  • Verify width and size of lumber using calipers and tape measures.
  • Input correct specifications into auto grader software to ensure properly graded lumber.
  • Ability to grade lumber on a line as it is coming through as well as stacked out lumber.
  • Work with quality coordinator and inspectors to ensure lumber stays within WWPA specifications for certification.
  • Correct all discrepancies of lumber grade or dimension in a timely manner.
  • Maintain consistent professional communication with all customers internal and external.
  • Keeps assigned areas clean and organized.
  • Abide by all safety / environmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge / Skills / Education and Continuous Training

What skills / certification / education must the individual have / maintain / gain? Include any degrees, certifications, and licenses required.

Education / Experience / Certification

  • High School Diploma / GED (or higher).
  • WWPA certification preferred .
  • At least 1 year lumber grading experience with WWPA standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High level communication skill and the ability to work with all levels of management.
  • Proficient with computers and grading software.
  • Ability to work both with a team and alone.
  • Safe working practices.
  • High level of problem solving skills.
  • Must be a safety minded individual.

Reporting Line and Supervisory Responsibilities

No supervisory responsibilities.

Reports to the Planer Coordinator.

What working conditions or physical functions are normally required to perform the essential functions of the job?

The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.

  • Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand;
  • walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance;

stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
