Women and Families Center is Hiring a Child Counselor/Advocate Near Meriden, CT

Position Summary: Responsible for providing crisis counseling, support, and advocacy for youth victims/survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones, as well as provide training and education on sexual assault issues. In addition to the ultimate coordination and response with local communities, partners, and organizations.

This is a full time position (35 hours per week) and may be required to work additional hours as organization demands require. Position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings, holidays, and weekends as required to perform job duties.

Salary: TBD based on education and experience. Additional stipend pay is available for hotline shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities - This position requires typical work operations and responsibilities such as, but not limited to:

  • Provide crisis intervention services for child survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones; including preparation for court and legal accompaniment and advocacy, medical, and police accompaniment; short-term supportive counseling; coordinate and facilitate support groups.
  • Actively participate in the multi-disciplinary teams in the agency's catchment area in order to support child survivors of sexual violence.
  • Develop and facilitate prevention education programs in K-12 schools as well as in the communities.
  • Develop, implement and actively participate in agency outreach and prevention education programs i.e. doctor's offices, religious organizations, social service agencies, women's organizations, community organizations, etc. Some events might be outside or regular business hours.
  • Present public and/or professional development trainings to facilitate increased knowledge, skills and response capacity.
  • Support and collaborate with co-workers and provide cross-training in prevention and other aspects of the child advocacy role.
  • Collect statistical data including participant demographics, and program effectiveness.
  • Provide coverage for the English 24-hour hotline, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Help when needed on the Spanish hotline if Spanish speaking.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in human service discipline required with a focus on children and families preferred.
  • One-year experience in sexual assault field or two years of professional experience in human service field working with children and families required.
  • 2 - 4 years counseling experience preferred.
  • Bilingual a plus.
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Must have available/reliable transportation during office hours and on-call shifts.
  • Must obtain and maintain certification as Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor required.
