OVERVIEW: At Woldumar Nature Center in Lansing, MI the Waterfront Activities Specialist/Lifeguard designs, supervises and leads aquatic activities including boating, kayaking, canoeing, and any shore-based natural science studies which require additional adult supervision.

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION AND BOATING SAFETY TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDED FOR EXCELLENT CANDIDATES.

Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the Camp Lifeguard works with camp counselors in the development and implementation of aquatic camp programs for Woldumar Nature Center. Camp Lifeguard provides guidance and instruction to 4-15 year old campers attending weekly day camp sessions at Woldumar Nature Center. The Camp lifeguard works to ensure the safe implementation of aquatic education programming.

HOURS/COMPENSATION: At least 2-3 days/week (16-24 hours) Monday through Friday. Specific days and hours will vary according to availability and program needs. Mandatory training week June 3-7. Starting wage $20/hr, commensurate with education and experience.

  • (2024 base wage is provided by a grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential in partnership with the Michigan Department of Education.)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Supervise groups of children 4-15 years of age in a day camp setting in and around water.

2. Supervise all aquatic activities.

3. Enforce all safety rules and procedures governing all aquatic activities.

4. Implement discipline and behavior management procedures as needed.

5. Prepare and maintain instructional and recreational materials and other camp equipment.

6. Attend a training period prior to summer camp.

7. Assist with select evening, family, and overnight programs.

8. Ensure site clean-up following every day and after the summer camp season.

9. Assist in the development and maintenance of the grounds and facilities.

10. Maintain a positive working relationship with all co-workers, campers, volunteers, parents, and visitors.

11. Be prepared and on time for scheduled work hours, programs, presentations, and meetings.

12. Maintain Lifeguard, First Aid/CPR certifications, and provide first aid care to campers and staff as needed.

13. Assist with the development and implementation of contracted camp programs.

14. Check in with Camp Director or AD on arrival and departure every day.

15. Uphold the personnel policies and procedures of Woldumar Nature Center and represent the organization in a positive, professional manner at all times. Adhere to WNC code of conduct and dress code during working hours.

16. Assist with other duties related to Woldumar's mission as assigned.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

1. Must be at least 18 years of age and able to pass a comprehensive background check.

2. Experience working and or supervising young people in outdoor and group settings in and around water.

3. Certified or able to obtain Lifeguard, first aid, and CPR certification, and Michigan Boating Safety Certification.

4. Possess a strong dedication to the natural world, and to the education, personal development, and care of young people in a diverse and inclusive community.

5. Physical ability to work outdoors, lead hikes on rough terrain in all weather conditions, and provide Lifeguard, first aid/CPR if necessary. Able to lift a minimum of 30 pounds.

6. Strong verbal communication skills.

7. Responsible, flexible, innovative, friendly, and dedicated to environmental education.

ORIENTATION AND TRAINING:

1. On-the-job training and orientation will be provided on-site by staff.

2. Opportunities for professional development. First Aid/CPR/AED certification training provided. Ask us about making this an internship for college credit!

Job Types: Part-time, Seasonal

Pay: $20.00 per hour
