WMU Homer Stryker, M.D. School of Medicine is Hiring an IT Systems Administrator Near Kalamazoo, MI

Overview

WMU Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine is searching for a driven IT Systems Administrator. Applicant must have a diverse background concerning computer operations support. This person should understand how to maintain the integrity and reliability of a computer system, perform preventive maintenance, install software, resolve database problems and perform backup and recovery functions.

The employee must be able to demonstrate the competencies necessary to provide service appropriate to the age of the population served.

Responsibilities

  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
  • Availability to work on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with a technical major and/or a minimum three years’ experience in systems administration.
  • Solid technical knowledge with current versions of Windows, Windows Server, OSX, SQL Server, MySQL, Linux.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • SAN/NAS/Storage solutions experience with NetApp.
  • VMware, vSphere.
  • Novell Zenworks.
  • Outlook, Sharepoint.
  • Understanding of firewalls, and security technologies.
  • Experience with 802.11 based wireless networks.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in using personal computer. equipment and related software.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in grammar and spelling skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn software packages as needed.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions accurately.
