Summary

The Operator Class 1 is responsible for operating a variety of machinery such as saws, presses, and drills to fabricate railcar component parts to meet close and complex tolerances.

Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Assembles and grinds products such as carbon and stainless steel, or aluminum, using grinders, tables or conveyor systems.
  • Uses hand tools such as wrenches, electric tools, and ratchets.
  • Monitors output and proper operation of mechanical equipment.
  • Adjusts parts to ensure quality requirements are met.
  • Conducts regular inspections of parts produced through measurements.
  • Reads drawings and follows production standards.
  • Uses common measuring equipment such as tape measures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and write English.
  • Ability to perform basic math functions in addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing, at all levels.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects effectively with accurate turnaround under tight timeframes.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Ability to punctually adhere to a regular work schedule.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to use tape measures.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
  • Machine operation knowledge of saws, drill presses, hoist, and grinders.

Production environment with exposure to heat, cold, noise, moving machinery and trip hazards where personal protective equipment such as head, eye, hearing, and foot protection are required as well as welding equipment such as welding hood, jacket, and gloves. Above the ankle, leather, composite toe safety boots are required prior to starting. Additional PPE may be required as determined by the environment.
