REQUIREMENTS: 1.) Possess current licensure to practice nursing in Texas 2.) BLS, ALS, and PALS 3) Experience in PACU setting/Perioperative nursing clinical experience or other Critical Care settings preferred. 4) Specialty Certification preferred 5) Basic Arrhythmia/Telemetry training preferred 6) Call may be required
Must have current licensure upon hire. New hires will have 60 days to obtain BLS, ALS and PALS certifications. New hires will not independently care for an adult patient without current ALS & BLS certification, a pediatric patient without current PALS & BLS certification.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs the responsibilities as assigned. Demonstrates flexibility when changes in assignments or staffing patterns are necessary. Coordinates nursing care and patient/family education for Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric patients using the nursing process. Communicates and facilitates patient care with team members. Maintains positive working relationships with staff and other departments to provide optimal quality outcomes within the framework of professional nursing practice. Attends all hospital required meetings and in-service education. Annually completes all required in-service and training (e.g. CPR, skills fair, Safety, etc., as appropriate to the job) as well as all educational requirements. Performs other duties as assigned.
Preop- Ensures that operative and informed consents are appropriately signed prior to anesthesia given.
- Implements protective measures to prevent injury in all areas of the peri-operative setting.
- Provides peri-operative education to patients and their families
- Must have excellent communication skills, patient care experience, and strong IV skills.
- May assist pretesting nurse in obtaining health history and patients home medications
- Follows anesthesia protocols
PACU- The RN must have or obtain an advanced understanding of surgical procedures and the effects of anesthesia. (Including but not limited to General, MAC, local and regional anesthesia)
- Monitor patients for condition change post anesthesia and report any changes to the physician/anesthesia provider
- Perform intervention duties of post-operative emergencies (e.g., Malignant Hyperthermia, emergency reintubation, hypovolemia due to blood loss)
- The RN must be aware of ASPAN standards regarding patient care.
- The RN will understand the relevant scoring system/discharge criteria for patient transfer or discharged to home (e.g., Modified Aldrete Score, Post Anesthesia Discharge Scoring System [PADSS])
- Treating pain, nausea, and other post-operative symptoms of anesthesia and administering medication as prescribed.
- Regularly checking vital signs to quickly intercept any potential issues and ensure a smooth recovery.
OR- If RN has previous experience, knowledge or credentials, may float to OR as needed
- The RN follows Universal Protocol policy for correct site, side and level, institutes normothermia measures and effective pain management measures, follows VTE and SCIP protocols and collaborates effectively with other disciplines as appropriate.

- Managing patient specimens in the appropriate manner
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Operationally, the Staff RN reports to the Department Manager and Surgical Services Director, administratively to the Argyle Chief Clinical Officer with oversite from the CNO of Wise Health System in Decatur
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to lift 50-60 lbs independently. Able to independently provide and/or assist with direct patient care.
OSHA TASK CATEGORY ONE: There is an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or a potential for spills splashes during the performance of the job. Universal precautions must be observed and protective devices worn by the employee when performing those tasks likely to cause exposure.
