Primary Purpose of Position

The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.(CAES) seeks a chair for the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design.
The CAES seeks a dynamic leader and scholar to serve in this critical role and continue the upward trajectory of this flourishing and highly visible department. The ideal candidate will have an earned doctorate or terminal degree in Environmental Sciences, Soil Science, Plant Science, Agronomy, Land Resources and Management, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Agricultural/Biological Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited university. Administrative supervisory experience in an institution of higher education with a strong track record of program success in developing, sustaining, advancing instructional outcomes and evaluating programs is required. Work experience within a land grant university is preferred (5 years). Applicants must also demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively and positively with students, faculty, staff and other university administrators. In addition, applicants should possess a distinguished record of research, teaching, scholarly achievement, and service. The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate a successful track record in gaining support from constituencies outside the University, such as, business and industry, state and federal agencies, and private foundations. This role is excellent for a person seeking to be a part of a growing academic enterprise on the cutting edge of discovery, learning, and engagement. The Chair shall provide innovative leadership to build upon the excellent research and educational activities within the department.
Climate-smart research and innovations are an integral part of our two Agriculture and Environmental Systems majors: Environmental Studies and Sustainable Land & Food Systems and Environmental Studies. The department is focused on food production and air, water and soil quality. Biological engineering majors learn to apply physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics to natural products and systems, to make a cleaner, more productive and sustainable world. Landscape architecture majors learn to design and plan for ecologically sound and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
CAES offers 9 BS degrees, 3 MS degrees and 1 PhD and educates nearly 1100 students. BS degrees include: Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Biological Engineering, Child Development and Family Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutritional Sciences, Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture. MS programs include: Agricultural Education, Agricultural and Environmental Systems and Food and Nutritional Sciences. The CAES also offers an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design is one of four departments in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The Department offers the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees and gives students the academic background for analyzing and solving scientific and social complexities of natural resource management. The Department's educational philosophy is to minimize prescriptive procedures and provide students with analytic tools for applying scientific knowledge to practical problems. Specific disciplines within the Department's mission include environmental science, plant and soil science, horticulture landscape design, landscape architecture, and biological engineering.
Minimum Requirements
•PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Environmental Sciences, Soil Science, Plant Science, Agronomy, Land Resources and Management, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Agricultural/Biological Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited university.
•Minimum of six years of demonstrated excellence in teaching and creative/research activities consistent with eligibility for appointment at the rank of associate professor or full professor
•Administrative experience relevant to the position
•Service-oriented leadership style
•Excellent people skills and the ability to motivate faculty, staff and students toward shared goals
•Appreciation of the land-grant philosophy
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
•Training and experience in one of the academic fields housed in the department (Environmental Sciences, Soil Science, Plant Science, Agronomy, Land Resources and Management, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Agricultural/Biological Engineering)
-Experience in academic administration at a land-grant institution
•Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in novel agricultural technologies and expertise in at least one area of agricultural technology
