Wisconsin Department of Health Services is Hiring a Supervising Attorney for Medicaid Services Near Madison, WI

Introduction

The Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) within the Department of Health Services (DHS) is recruiting to fill a Supervising Attorney for Medicaid Services position in Madison. DHS strives to protect and promote the health and safety of all people of Wisconsin through the efforts of a dedicated and diverse workforce. This position offers the option for a hybrid of remote and in-office work and is headquartered in the 1 W. Wilson Street office in downtown Madison. Remote work options will be discussed in more detail if presented with a job offer.

Position Summary

As the Supervising Attorney for Medicaid Services, you will:

  • Supervise attorneys who provide legal support to the Division of Medicaid Services (DMS).
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to DMS.
  • Coordinate Medicaid legal work across divisions.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to the Office of the Secretary on Medicaid issues and support legislative and policy initiatives relating to Medicaid.
  • Represent OLC in executive level meetings, committees, and projects involving Medicaid.

Salary Information

The starting salary is between $52.00-$55.26 per hour (approximately $108,000-$115,000 annually) or up to the appointment maximum at the time of the appointment, depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. You will also receive an additional hourly add-on of $2.75 per hour for supervising attorney staff. A 12-month probationary period is required.

This position is classified as an Attorney Supervisor and is in pay schedule and range 71/01. Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. For current employees transferring or promoting into this supervisory role, the current compensation plan allows an increase up to the $55.26 per hour rate or an increase up to $6.48 per hour from the current pay rate.

Job Details

  • All applicants who may be appointed to this position will be required to allow DHS to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.
  • DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, selected candidates will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.
  • Employees must have access to both a private workspace and secure high-speed internet to work remotely. Mileage reimbursement to the employee’s headquarter location is not provided.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:

  • Licensure to practice law in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Experience or training with Medicaid law.
  • Experience providing legal advice and representation on complex legal issues.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting state and federal statutes and administrative rules.

Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:

  • Experience providing legal advice and counsel to senior or executive leadership on Medicaid issues.
  • Formal supervisory experience (e.g., resolving conflict, evaluating employee performance, hiring, discipline, assigning work, etc.).
  • Experience supervising staff who work with Medicaid programs, policies, or laws.
