0.90 FTE, 72 Hours a Pay Period
Nights, hours between 7 pm - 7 am
Weekends: Every Third Weekend
Holidays: Every Third Holiday

Position Overview:

The Registered Nurse is a health care professional who is skilled in all aspects of the nursing process. They are adaptable to the myriad of needs of the individual and family during health and illness and has the ability to prioritize. The RN is responsible for the direction of staff members assigned to them. The RN is responsible and accountable for the delivery of individualized nursing care to the Obstetrical/Gynecological (OB/GYN) and Medical/Surgical (Med/Surg) populations. The RN has an advanced understanding of the Nursing Practice Process including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the OB/GYN, medical, and surgical patients. They use this understanding while providing direct care including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and educational needs of the patient and family. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Modifies the care plan based on the needs of the patient, consults with the medical staff about changes in the patient’s condition.
  2. Acts as a resource to other team members including students.
  3. Keeps updated on current nursing practice, medications and legal issues related to patient-based services.
  4. Follows the recommended infection control policies when caring for patients. Is constantly vigilant to the safety needs of patients, taking necessary precautions as warranted.
  5. Conforms to the Nurse Practice Act. Conducts Medical Screening Exams under the direction of the OB provider.
  6. Collects, interprets, and documents in the EMR and communicates appropriately pertinent data that is relevant to the patient’s care with other members of the health care team. Reports malfunctioning equipment promptly and removes this from the patient care area to maintain a safe environment.
  7. Coordination of newborn care when transitioning to a higher level of nursery care (NICU).
  8. Participates in and supports continuous improvement initiatives.
  9. May be required to float to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as necessary.
  10. Provides safe and effective care to patients in the Family Birth Center and Med/Surg/Peds, including but not limited to:
  • Fetal monitoring application and interpretation
  • Performing vaginal exams
  • Pre-term monitoring
  • OB checks
  • External version
  • Phototherapy
  • Non-stress/Stress testing of the OB patient
  • Pitocin induction
  • Labor management during all phases of labor and delivery
  • Care of the patient having a C-Section
  • Monitoring of the Vaginal Birth After C-Section (VBAC) patient
  • Neonatal resuscitation
  • Assisting with and after care of circumcised infants
  • Newborn hearing screening
  • Education for the prenatal patient or breast-feeding mother
  • Care of the "Little Ones Remembered" patient
  • Oxygen delivery to a stressed newborn
  • Answers patient call lights and addresses patient needs

Essential Skills and Experience:

  1. Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  2. RN License in Minnesota
  3. BLS Certification
  4. Neonatal Resuscitation certification required within one year
  5. STABLE Certification required within one year
  6. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training will be provided with recertification required every two years
  7. Trauma Training is completed in house and needs to be completed by end of orientation
  8. Verbalizes role in public address codes
  9. Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word and Outlook. Patient Information Database (Cerner)

Nonessential Skills and Experience:

  1. ACLS
  2. Prior maternity nursing experience is desired for Family Birth Center positions
