Salary:

The Relay Field Technician (Field Services) will be directly responsible for the execution of facility maintenance and testing activities in high voltage transmission substations. The position will have an emphasis on protection and control (relay) or substation equipment but will require work in both areas, with strong preference on P&C. The Technician must be able to perform basic tasks associated with system equipment repair and maintenance as well as provide technical assistance and oversight to contractors. Maintenance and testing activities include but are not limited to air switches, gas circuit breakers, current and potential transformers, power transformers, reactors, relays, meters, SCADA equipment, station batteries, and telecom equipment. Technician will be required to comply with all company safety rules and procedures. The technician will be responsible for company supplied tools, test equipment and vehicles. The Technician will be responsible for the safety and work quality of the contract crews and proper tracking and reporting of completed job units to the WETT Field Operations Supervisor. This position is non-exempt; and reports to the Field Supervisor.

This position is supporting work on the company’s system in the Big Spring, Midland, Dickens, and Gail areas. This position will report out of Big Spring, TX and will report to the Field Operations Supervisor.

This is a full-time entry-level position.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for either directly performing or overseeing contractors performing the following work associated with all substation equipment:

  • Installation
  • Troubleshooting
  • Maintenance
  • Repairs
  • Switching
  • Testing/Commissioning
  • Adjusting
  • Wiring
  • Lead contract and internal crews testing relays and/or other equipment within a substation.
  • Assist in performing or perform the acceptance and installation tests on substation and protection and control equipment.
  • Oversee and perform testing on substation and protection and control equipment.
  • Review and perform various substation switching activities.
  • Assist in performing and analyzing applicable equipment test results to determine pass/fail criteria and appropriate corrective actions, when necessary.
  • Install, test, and maintain new or added system equipment.
  • Safely operate various types of equipment, bucket truck, aerial lift, skid steer, forklifts, etc.
  • Maintain company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditions.
  • Check, verify, and prepare routine reports.
  • Possess comprehensive knowledge of subject matter. Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group. May act as a lead during assigned activities.
  • Perform work under minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related electrical/technology field is preferred; sufficient work experience may take place of degree.
  • Minimum of 1 to 2 years work experience at a professional level in substation maintenance or P&C.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and testing standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
  • Ability to lead, coach and train other technicians.
  • Willing to work over-time or long hours to meet schedule or during emergency conditions and/or when requested. Schedules can change frequently and with short notice.
  • Must be capable of working in close proximity to energized substation and transmission line equipment.
  • Ability to accurately appraise technical situations and recommend resolutions to problems.
  • Able to oversee contractors to ensure that personnel are working in accordance with company policy.
  • Ability to interface, communicate, and coordinate with contractors, engineers, vendors, and other parties connected with a project or maintenance activity.
  • Computer skills must include a minimum of Microsoft Word, Excel, & Outlook, as well as software programs designed to interface with the test equipment.
  • Ability to work outside in an electrical substation environment, exposure to heat and cold, climbing stairs and ladders, and working in elevated areas.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with changing priorities.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Receptive to constructive instruction/coaching.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Must possess or be capable of obtaining a Commercial Drivers’ License.
  • Must pass pre-employment Drug, Alcohol and Background Checks; must continue to pass random tests. 
  • Must be capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.

Qualified applicants must also possess technical knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of SEL and GE relay equipment and software.
  • Knowledge in test software such as Doble RTS and Protection suite.
  • Ability to review and interpret end-to-end relay line protection test plans.
  • Ability to understand the basics of one-line, three-line, AC/DC schemes, and connection diagrams.
  • Ability to understand the basics of a Potential Transformer (PT), Coupling Capacitor Voltage Transformer (CCVT), and a Current Transformer (CT).
  • Ability to perform, review, and interpret breaker, CT, CVVT, PT, transformer, and other equipment test results, including but not limited to; time and travel, coil resistance, injection testing, polarity testing, insulation resistance, power factor).
  • Must be familiar with current, potential, and trip circuits.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency of reviewing and understanding wiring within station circuits and relay panels.
  • Must demonstrate general understating of relay setting logic and basic relay setting troubleshooting.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in interpretation of various test results and be able to determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Knowledge of various test equipment including Omicron, Fluke, Doble, Megger, etc.
  • Working knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, ICEA, and NETA standards.
  • Strong emphasis on safety and questioning attitude.
