What You'll Do

Our intern will work on the following projects:

Main Project #1:

-One major issue in padel is the durability of the paddles. Efforts have been made to strengthen the paddles using various methods, but there is no durability test/standard to determine if a paddle is “durable enough.” Co-op (with input from the Engineering team) will be responsible for designing a durability-testing machine that will stress paddles in a similar condition to normal play. The durability test will include wear to the face and frame of the paddle through direct impact. After completing construction of the machine, co-op will determine a standard of acceptable durability, and test our paddles as well as competitor paddles against that standard. Using the information, co-op will consult the Engineering team for proposed ideas to increase durability across our franchises.

Main Project #2:

-In 2020, Wilson engineers, in collaboration with a college senior design project, developed a mechanical device to simulate a tennis swing. The device “arm” works great, but only in one plane. Our co-op will be responsible for designing a mechanism to simulate a “wrist,” which will more accurately represent a modern swing. Co-op will work with engineers, as well as the machine shop, to CAD a functioning wrist, design it in a manufacturable manner, and decide on proper materials using stress-strain calculations. Co-op will also work with our motion capture and 3D predictive softwares to actuate the wrist in accordance with the arm swinging. Once functioning, co-op will use High Speed video to record racquets in an attempt to identify unique bending moments in our different racquet franchises. Results will be used and implemented in future racquet designs.

Our Co-Op will work closely with the Advanced Innovation team on all aspects of tennis racquet and padel paddle development. From simplifications in manufacturing, to prototyping new composite layups and ideas, our co-op will work to create a great playing paddle in a unique way. Co-op will learn in depth about composites, specifically carbon fiber, foams, manufacturing processes, designing for scale, as well as numerous other topics related to the creation and processing of a padel paddle.

Other Responsibilities will include:

Co-op will support the Racquet Sports Product Development group in data collection and physicals testing, run durability studies, acoustical testing of pickleball paddles, and of course, playtesting product.

Please note this is a Co-Op internship. The Co-Op will be with Wilson from June through December.
