Wilson County Government is Hiring an Environmental Health Program Specialist Near Wilson, NC

The Wilson County Health Department is now accepting applications for an Environmental Health Program Specialist for the Food, Lodging, and Institution Program.
 
 HOURS: The regular work hours are from 8:00am to 5:00 pm, five days a week (Monday through Friday). Night, evening, and weekend work is performed as needed or required for environmental health related emergencies, investigations, inspections, or other activities.
 
 Wilson County offers competitive pay based on a candidate's experience (DOE).

The primary purpose of this position is to implement North Carolina Food, Lodging, and Institution Rules and provide immediate supervision to the program’s Environmental Health Specialists. The Environmental Health Program Specialist serves as the advanced professional in environmental health work in the promotion of public health through education, surveillance, consultation, inspection, and enforcement of State, local, and Federal environmental laws and regulations.
 
 Essential duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Performs inspections and evaluations of various food establishments, medical facilities, childcare facilities, swimming pools, summer camps, schools, lodging, tattoo artists, residential care facilities and more.
  • Coordinate program staff to ensure total coverage and equal distribution of all required inspections.
  • Perform office duties such as timesheets, travel requests, daily reports, staff meetings, continuing education, quality assurance, etc.
  • Conduct plan review for new food establishments. 
  • Keeps track of program responsibilities and oversees reports generated and various correspondence with NCDHHS and/or other agencies. 
  • Plan and present sanitation and environmental related programs for the public and operators of facilities under local jurisdiction. 
  • Investigate public complaints and requests for services. 
  • Serve as team lead for outbreak investigation in the case of a foodborne illness outbreak.
  • Other duties as necessary.

Necessary Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Extensive knowledge of food protection and thorough understanding of all State, local, and Federal environmental laws and regulations. . 
  • Considerable knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and procedures, as well as complete understanding of the concepts of public health law. 
  • Considerable knowledge of microbiology, biology, chemistry, food science, epidemiology, soil science, entomology, and basic engineering technology as applied to environmental health practices. 
  • General knowledge of the responsibilities of other agencies relating to environmental health and community resources. 
  • General knowledge of the interrelationship between socio-economic factors and environmental health concerns. 
  • Knowledge of architecture and engineering in plan review for food service establishments and public swimming pools.
  • Ability to analyze and comprehend a wide variety of technical and administrative regulations, records, and reports. 
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with a wide range of public contacts while enforcing public health laws and regulations. 
  • Ability to lead through example as well as instruction.
  • Ability to motivate and educate business and property owners and the consuming public in matters related to protecting and promoting public health. 
  • Ability to present formal environmental health training programs.
  • Ability to develop and express ideas and opinions concisely, comprehensively, and clearly in oral and written form. 
  • Ability to independently plan and schedule work activities and perform assignments.
  • Ability to apply environmental health knowledge and techniques in the investigation of environmental health problems. 
  • Ability to coordinate work in a specialized program area. 
  • Ability to plan and implement education programs. 
  • Ability to work with others in solving the more complex environmental problems

Must have two years of experience at the Environmental Health Specialist level in a health department.
 
 Must provide copy of Transcripts. 
 
 Necessary Special Qualifications: 

  • Registered as an Environmental Health Specialist by the North Carolina State Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners. 
  • Valid NC Drivers License

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Authorization issued by NCDHHS in Food, Lodging & Institutions.
  • Authorization in all Environmental Health Service areas highly preferred: Public Swimming Pools, Childcare and School Sanitation, Tattoos, and Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention
