The Department of Campus Recreation provides quality recreational opportunities to all members of the William & Mary Community to enhance and foster a lifelong appreciation for health, wellness and recreation.
Position Summary
An Outdoor Recreation Specialist will lead 2-4 activity-specific Tribe Adventure Programs for training student workers each year. In addition, they will assist Tribe Adventure Program staff with leading one or more outdoor experiences in their area of expertise for faculty, staff, and students per year. The Specialist possesses specialized training certification(s) and/or experience in adventure recreation such as, but not limited to paddling, rock climbing, caving, SCUBA, and/or challenge course management.
Conditions of Employment
  • Availability to work a variety of different shifts (weekends, early morning, afternoon, late night) depending on business needs is required.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Must have or complete required certifications in an area of outdoor recreation within 1 month of employment.
  • This is a restricted position, subject to the continued availability of funding.
  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have completed a certification in an area of outdoor recreation such as but not limited to: American Canoe Association, American Mountain Guides Association, Professional Climbing Instructors Association, National Outdoor Leadership School, Climbing Wall Association, Association for Challenge Course Technology, Wilderness Education Association.
  • Experience working or volunteering with an outdoor recreation program/facility.
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain these).
  • Availability to work a variety of different shifts (weekends, early morning, afternoon, late night) depending on business needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a university setting.
  • Membership and involvement with National Association relevant to the class being taught (where applicable).
  • Wilderness First Responder.
  • Leave No Trace Trainer Certification.
