Whitlock Builders is Hiring a Field Superintendent Near Charlotte, NC

THE FIELD SUPERINTENDENT'S responsibility includes the following tasks and duties:

The purpose of this position is to manage the daily progress of specific construction projects from start to finish as assigned to ensure the highest degree of productivity and customer satisfaction.

RESPONSIBILITIES of the Field Superintendent

  • Customer Satisfaction
  • Jobsite Supervision, Protection, and Cleanliness
  • Carpentry Labor
  • Supervision and Scheduling of Subcontractors
  • Inspections
  • Material Take-Offs and Orders
  • Maintenance of Job Paperwork

Site Management

  • Responsible for on-site management of the construction job. Your conscientious performance is extremely important to the success of our company. You’re our representative to both the customer and the community at large. We get most of our work because of our reputation, and you’re a very important part of that reputation. Both the quality of your work and the appearance of your jobsite reflect on you and our company.
  • Responsible for knowing and understanding all job paperwork: plans, specifications, change orders, etc. Any questions you have, or discrepancies you discover, should be checked with the Production Manager. You’re responsible for maintaining all job records as required by the Office. These records are crucial for our work and must be consistently maintained by the Field Superintendent.
  • Responsible for performing all carpentry labor on the job, requesting help as it’s needed. When other carpenters or helpers are on your job, you’re responsible for assigning the work and generally supervising them, including their paperwork (time sheets, etc.). For helpers and carpenters, the Field Superintendent’s responsibility includes delegating work that can teach new skills.
  • Scheduling and coordinating all subcontractors in consultation with the Production Manager, working out their layout problems, ensuring their proper performance, as well as seeing that they get timely inspections of their work. It’s your responsibility to be sure that all subcontractors adhere to all of the company’s policies concerning safety, cleanliness, alcohol and drug use, and customer consideration.
  • Preparing final material take-offs and order materials promptly and accurately. You’re responsible for the accuracy in quantity and measurement, damage, quality problems of all deliveries to your job. Delivery truck drivers are to wait for your inspection, as your signature approves the condition and count of the order. Any discrepancy is to be noted on the delivery ticket. It’s imperative that you check such things as door swings, window sizes, cabinet sizes and types, lumber type and grade, etc. before you sign the delivery ticket.
  • Remember, it’s your jobsite. The Production Manager will be responsible for ordering doors, windows, cabinets, and other “specialty” items.
  • Maintaining a clean jobsite. This is important for many reasons, among them safety and efficiency. A sloppy site reflects badly on your work and our company. Dust protection is one of your most important jobs. Be sure to control any mud on your site. All jobsites are to be broom-cleaned daily. Debris is to be properly stored and hauled away weekly. You must secure permission of the customer before smoking, and it’s your responsibility to monitor subcontractors smoking on your site.
  • Responsible for protecting the customer’s property. Do not use anything: furniture, appliances, tools, equipment, or cleaning supplies that belong to the customer. Be sure you lock and secure the jobsite before you leave for the day. You must secure all ladders and equipment on the site. (Think about the safety problems of children that could arise after you leave.) All materials are to be stored in a safe place. The customer’s telephone is only to be used for business and emergency personal calls. You must never disturb a customer with loud radios or foul and abusive language.
  • Responsible for job safety for both the customer and our workers. Be sure that job conditions encourage safety. Monitor both company and individual equipment for proper safety features and safe electrical cords, etc., and inform the Production Manager of any unsafe conditions. Proper safety equipment must be used where appropriate.
  • Documenting changes. We always want to accommodate our customers and their wishes, but if they want any extra work or want to make any changes, please document their request/s and don’t agree to do anything without getting approval from the Office.
  • Responsible for installing a job sign in the most prominent place possible and for maintaining its condition. We receive many calls based on the job signs. We all benefit when we can sign up new work. Every lead is important.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of the project schedule. To be sure your job is on or ahead of schedule, you must monitor your progress against the completion date. Notify the Production Manager as soon as possible of any delays or conditions that will affect the schedule. You must also notify the Office if you’re having problems maintaining the schedule. Coordination of all elements that make up a typical job requires adherence to a tight schedule. You’re our link to the jobsite, and we need to know when you need any help.
  • Remember, our workday is from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You and your crews are expected to take a half-hour unpaid lunch. Any deviations from this schedule must be approved by the production manager or owner. You’re expected to check in with the Production Manager on a daily basis to report on the progress of subs and inspections, make any manpower requests for the next day, discuss special materials requests, overall job scheduling and customer concerns.

End-of-Job Responsibilities

The Field Superintendent is responsible for preparing a punch list (with the assistance of the Production Manager) for the client to address any final contract items requiring immediate attention before the job is complete. All punch list items are to be completed immediately and the job finalized as soon as possible.

Access

Physical Requirements

The Field Superintendent is required to lift up to 80 pounds, climb ladders, work on roofs, operate power tools and hand tools, and drive a truck. It’s especially important to use proper lifting techniques and maintain physical conditioning on a weekly basis to prevent injuries.

Follow Through

You must pay attention to follow through. Just because you notify the Office, a sub, or the customer of a question or problem, don’t assume that someone else is taking care of the situation. It’s your job and your responsibility to resolve and complete the loose ends and unknowns on the jobsite.
