Position Summary:
The Guest Service Coordinator (GSC) will work to ensure the safety and security of each Emergency Shelter Service (ESS) guest, volunteer and staff member. The GSC will follow correct procedures of performing an ESS guest intake, which includes having every guest go through our security check point, assigning the guests into a locker, ensuring a safe day room, and provide an atmosphere of kindness to each person that enters our doors.
Wheeler Mission is a privately funded 501 (c) 3 non-profit, evangelical Christian ministry whose designated purpose is religious. We are a Christ-centered ministry which is dedicated to sharing the Gospel and helping the homeless and impoverished. Wheeler Mission considers every position one of ministry and a vital and valued part of our team. Qualifications:
To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position.
- Possess a sincere love of Christ and maintain a Christian walk that is evident of that love. Individual must be willing to sign and adhere to the WM Statement of Faith.
- Dependability – consistently at work and on time, reports to all scheduled shifts, follows instructions, responds to management direction and solicits feedback to improve personal performance, and completes tasks in a timely and accurate manner.
- Must interact professionally with guests, volunteers, and the general public and be able to prioritize work activities, use time wisely and develop realistic action plans.
- Must have a pleasant demeanor and maintain the highest degree of confidentiality. Must have the ability to interact with many different types of people and personalities.
- Must be able to address issues of conflict with guests, in a constructive and Biblical manner.
- Able to relay and enforce program and building polices.
- Use of de-escalation techniques to calm chaotic and agitated situations while speaking clearly and with authority in positive or negative situations.
Essential Requirements:

- Maintain the legal guidelines of confidentiality regarding all guests within the (SFM).
- Professionally interact with individuals outside of Wheeler.
- Receive and transfer phone calls.
- Document and report the events of the day on Shift Report.
Work Environment:
Must be comfortable in dealing with homeless men in varying stages of addiction, mental/physical disabilities, and judicial issues.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Be able to communicate clearly and hear well.
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to walk up and down stairs repetitively.

Required Education and Experience:
- Must have a high school diploma
- Must be proficient using Microsoft Office suite of products.
- Must be able to learn new computer programs, such as Mission Tracker.
- Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Experience working with homeless, mentally ill, and those struggling with substance use.
Background Investigation and Drug Testing:
- After a “conditional offer of employment” is made, the individual must pass a background investigation which includes a consumer credit investigative report.
- Wheeler Mission has a mandatory drug testing policy for all new employees. The successful applicant must submit to and pass a drug and/or alcohol test. This drug and/or alcohol testing may occur any time after the applicant receives a conditional offer of employment. All employees must sign and adhere to WM Drugs and Alcohol policy and remain free from addiction to drugs or alcohol.
Statement of Conflict of Interest/Confidentiality
This position requires a confidentiality statement.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The GSC may be asked to assist in the task supervision of volunteers.
Expected Hours of Work:
- This is a full-time 40 hour a week position, which will require working on holidays, evenings, overnights and weekends. Overtime may be required.
Travel:
Occasional travel locally may be required.
