Wheaton College is Hiring an Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Transition Programs Near Norton, MA

The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Transition Programs serves to create a vibrant, inclusive campus life by implementing diverse, engaging programs and supporting student organizations. The Assistant Director advises the Wheaton Events Board as well as plays a collaborative role with the other staff in the office to provide support to all clubs and organizations in their development, leadership training, and general program support. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director of Campus Center and Leadership Programs.
Student Club and Organization Support
  • Advises the Wheaton Events Board (WEB)
    • Provides oversight and approval of WEB budget, financial operations and expenditure
    • Develops leadership training for WEB in association with the WEB student Chair
    • Assists WEB in developing and executing Spring Weekend
  • In coordination with the other professional staff of SAIL, serve as the SAIL advisor for an equal percentage of clubs and organizations to support programmatic and group development efforts, including but not limited to Student Leader Training, SAIL Open Hours, and Leadership Rubric Assessment.
  • Coordinates registration process for new student organizations.
  • Provides leadership development and event planning training for student organizations.
  • Develop an advisor model that encourages active participation from faculty and staff.
  • Collaborates with SAIL staff to train club advisors and work collaboratively with club faculty/staff advisors to support the clubs in their missions and goals.
Student Programming
  • Serve as an office administrator in the Campus Information Systems, Engage@Wheaton and other related systems (CVent, etc.)
  • Oversee programming that is aligned with the strategic goals/mission of the institution; focuses on enhancing the sense of community, student engagement & retention, personal development and supports Wheaton’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates an assigned set of student employees who support student events and programming.
  • Strategizes evening and weekend events, working with student organizations, campus departments and student employees to ensure regular weekend and late-night programming.
  • Program assessment; communicates data and outcomes regarding program success, student engagement, attendance and student satisfaction as needed.
  • Assist students in developing opportunities to utilize the Lyons Den for student engagement.
Transition Programs
  • Assist in the development and implementation of student transition programs, including New Student Orientation (summer, fall, spring).
  • Recruit, select, and train the Orientation Leaders and other students assisting with Orientation and transition programming.
  • Articulates the value of campus activities’ programming as part of creating a vibrant campus environment that develops student leaders and incorporates intercultural awareness throughout each phase of the programming process.
  • Supports department, division and institutional events, including but not limited to, Orientation, Family & Friends Weekend, Spring Weekend, Senior Week and Commencement.
  • Collaboratively creates, coordinates, implements and evaluates programs and services associated with other departments in Student Affairs and at the College.
Other Duties
  • Represents Division of Student Affairs on assigned committees.
  • Attends trainings, retreats, and planning sessions as assigned by the Director.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 1-3 years professional experience with program planning, event management, contracts or college student affairs OR 1-2 years professional or graduate level experience within a higher education setting preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required, master’s in college student personnel administration, higher education administration, or a related area
  • Experience with program planning, event management, contracts
  • General knowledge of sound/lighting systems, and media equipment used in programming
  • Experience working with diverse populations and a demonstrated understanding of the issues faced by students who are members of diverse identity groups that comprise our campus population
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory
  • Leadership development theory and leadership program planning
  • Experiencing advising student organizations, particularly programming boards, intercultural student organizations and/or media organizations
  • Computer skills; Word, Excel, Powerpoint, WordPress
  • Understands social media uses (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal communication & writing skills
  • Individual commitment and dedication to serving as a leader in an inclusive community which strives to provide an equitable and engaging experience for all students
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to student development
  • Experience working as part of a group and proven to be a “team player”
  • Ability to work nights and weekends
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree in Student Affairs, or similar field

When determining and establishing hiring rates or recruitment ranges for a position, the College considers a number of factors including the budget for the position, the range of the grade, the external market for the position or similar positions, level and scope of responsibilities, required education, skills and relevant experience as well as internal equity. All salary offers must have the prior approval of the Office of Human Resources.
The salary for this position will be commensurate with the qualifications, education and experience.
