Job: Full-Time Project Editor based in Tucson, Arizona

(Position is based in Tucson Arizona, with the option to work hybrid or remotely for qualified individuals living in the Tucson or Phoenix metro areas)

Western National Parks Association (WNPA) seeks a publishing professional to work within the Marketing & Communications team. The Project Editor oversees the planning, development, design, and production of educational publications for various print media. The Publishing Team focuses on creating high-quality books and other publishing assets for visitors to our 70 partner national parks and online customers. This position also works collaboratively with other specialists on the team, to develop diverse publications that help fulfill the collective missions of WNPA and the National Park Service. WNPA is a nonprofit publishing partner of the National Park Service, with a legacy of publishing excellence since 1938. With award-winning publications that inspire greater understanding of cultural, historical, national, and recreational resources, the Publishing Department supports innovative, collaborative, and creative thinking to help advance WNPA’s mission to ensure that national parks are increasingly valued by all.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

This role is responsible for completing the following tasks and any related tasks as assigned:

  • Oversee all aspects of editorial project management, managing schedules, and workflows, within budgets, across various projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of project timelines, milestones, and deliverables, ensuring projects progress smoothly through editorial workflow.
  • Collaborate and communicate with stakeholders including freelancers, internal teams, vendors, and park partners to plan for and schedule projects, and track milestones, making sure deadlines and specifications are met.
  • Coordinate and manage external relationships and act as a liaison between publishing team, marketing, ecommerce, operations and external stakeholders.
  • Research and secure necessary permissions for third-party content, oversee copyright administration across a broad range of projects.
  • Conduct research, coordinate implementation of changes to departmental data and information systems.
  • Manage shared files, maintaining records, metadata, reports, and documentation, ensuring accuracy and accessibility.
  • Format and prepare text, photography, and illustrations, following established guidelines and formatting standards.
  • Contribute to discussions about and planning for marketing for a broad range of publications.
  • May assist with proofreading, project research, and collaboration with departmental colleagues and park partners on new project development as needed.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned or requested.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

This role must possess advanced to expert knowledge of, skill in, and/or ability in the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in publishing or related field.
  • Previous experience as an editorial assistant, associate/assistant editor, production editor or related positions preferred.
  • Familiarity with book production and copyright basics preferred.
  • Experience working with project management programs required, Asana preferred.
  • Experience and working knowledge of various computer programs including but not limited to databases, video conferencing software (i.e. Zoom), Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint), and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop).
  • Ability to oversee multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as collaboratively, with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to learn on the job, quickly adjust to shifting priorities, organize, and re-prioritize.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to work diplomatically with a variety of people.
  • Strong project management, coordination, and organizational skills with superior attention to detail.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining positive professional relationships both inside and outside of the organization.

TRAVEL

  • Occasional travel required for meetings, conferences, and visits to partner parks.
