WestCoast Children's Clinic, located in Oakland, California, is a non-profit community psychology clinic that provides mental health services to Bay Area children, youth and families. Working at WestCoast Children's Clinic means being part of an organization that is client-centered, trauma-informed, collaborative, and committed to justice and equity.

The Support Counselor Shift Lead is an integral member of a collaborative team within the innovative STAT Program. The STAT Program offers mental health Screening, Stabilization, and Transition ( STAT) services to children entering the foster care system in Alameda County. Operating alongside STAT Clinicians, an Assessment Center Manager, the STAT Assistant Program Director, Alameda County Social Service staff, and the Assessment Center Public Health Nurse, the position plays a key role in delivering comprehensive care, supervision, and assessment for children in a nurturing and child-friendly environment at the Alameda County Assessment Center.

As a Support Counselor Shift Lead, you will:

  • Contribute to comprehensive child assessments within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide nurturing support to children, intervening during crises and de-escalation as part of the Assessment Center staff.
  • Conduct intakes for children entering the Assessment Center, and ensuring thier basic needs are met.
  • Document child medication details accurately and promptly according to program protocols.
  • Monitor and engage children in age-appropriate activities, maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Adapt to schedule changes and additional coverage needs, participating in various support functions.
  • Lead work shifts, manage task delegation, and facilitate shift change debriefing in the absence of Site Manager.
  • Provide consultation on complex client cases and support STAT Support Counselor staff.
  • Complete end-of-shift paperwork accurately and submit to the next shift lead promptly.
  • Coach and guide staff using knowledge of STAT Program policies and procedures.
  • Support youth in creative engagement activities and lead group activities as needed.
  • Assist in training and developing staff, including documentation.
  • Participate in onboarding and ongoing training for staff development.
  • Act as a mentor to new Support Counselor staff, assist with interviews and hiring.
  • Participate in EHR database training, billing, and meet agency-set billable hours and goals.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, education, child development, or other social science.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working in a milieu or similar environment (milieu experience may substitute for a BA degree based on experience level)
  • Master's degree in a related field is a plus.
  • Demonstrated resilience in high-stress situations, showcasing expertise in de-escalation and situational management.
  • Proven ability to identify and address workflow issues in real-time within the Assessment Center.

Working Conditions/Shifts:

Overnight - 11:00PM-8:00AM

Day - 7:00AM-4:00PM

Swing - 3:00PM-12:00AM

  • The role entails working with children who have experienced trauma.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, including the common cold, flu, and tuberculosis.
  • Flexibility in working hours, including evenings, overnight shifts, and weekends.
  • Overnight shifts are fully awake shifts - Support Counselors must stay alert and available to address children's needs or perform intakes throughout the entire shift.
  • The position does not involve restraining children.
Position Details and Compensation:
  • This is a full-time, hourly position. Starting rate is $28.50 per hour ($31.35 for bilingual Spanish applicants), as well as additional Overnight and Weekend pay differential.
  • Includes benefits package, 403b and performance-based compensation plans.
  • This position is located at the Assessment Center in Hayward, CA.
