Mission College is now accepting applications for a part-time counselor position, with a focus on the UMOJA community. Applicants who possess the knowledge, skills, and life experiences to address the cultural and educational needs of our diverse student population are encouraged to apply.
Mission College serves a region of the San Francisco Bay Area that includes urban neighborhoods, business centers and residential communities. Nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley, Mission College enjoys an entrepreneurial and innovative energy in sync with its closest technology and business neighbors. Mission College has been identified by the federal government as being both an AANAPISI and a Hispanic-serving institution. Currently, Federal HSI and AANAPISI grants support our efforts to bridge achievement gaps for these groups.
The successful candidate will be an equity-minded professional committed to closing achievement gaps and further committed to collaboration with faculty, classified professional staff, administration, students and members of the greater community towards student success.
PART-TIME, ASSOCIATE FACULTY POOL
Applications for Part-Time, Associate Faculty pools are continually accepted (unless otherwise specified) by the District and will be added to the application pool for review by hiring authorities on an as-needed basis. Should you be invited for an interview, you will be contacted by a District representative.
Assignment

This position is a part-time position as an Associate Counselor. The academic assignment may include day, evening or Saturday assignments. The assignments are as needed, during Spring, Summer, Winter, and/or Fall semesters. This position is represented by the West Valley-Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT), AFT 6554.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is based on a percentage of workload, up to a maximum of 67% of a full-time load. Salary is prorated based on an initial hiring salary range of $34,143-$55,099 per semester; and is based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience.
Minimum Qualifications

1. Education - Possess one of the following:
  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a California License as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); OR
  • The equivalent of the above.
AND
2. Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the following desired qualification(s):
  • Experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and the field of Counseling shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
  • Experience working with low-income, educationally under-prepared, historically underrepresented, and/or limited English-speaking populations.
  • Experience providing academic, career, and personal counseling.
  • Familiarity of or experience with community college affinity programs such as UMOJA and ASPIRE
  • Ability to work in a counseling and teaching relationship with students of varying backgrounds.
  • Willingness to examine and re-mediate one's instructional, relational, and other practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps in higher education.
  • Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.
  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution.
  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in personal, career and academic counseling.
  • Ability to teach counseling courses.
  • Ability to counsel/instruct students on an individual or group basis on study skills/learning.
  • Strong organizational skills, excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to convey information clearly, problem solve, and respond appropriately to student and staff needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with other college staff.
  • Understanding of the community college system.
  • Experience with personal/crisis counseling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of effective teamwork principles and demonstrated application.
  • Effective organization and planning skills.
  • Computer skills commensurate with the functions of the position.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Counseling duties and responsibilities may consist of one or more of the following:
  • Counsel and advise students, on both an appointment and a drop-in basis.
  • Perform specialized work duties as necessary during registration periods.
  • Provide formal in-service training.
  • Participate in program/service development activities.
  • Perform other duties as required for the department and/or college.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.
