JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction will establish and supervise the effective operation of educational programs throughout the school district.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Planning- Curricular and Instructional Improvement

  • Provide District-wide leadership and support to schools in the areas of supervision and evaluation of curriculum, assessment and program development.
  • Guide the District in meeting the requirements of PA State Board of Education Rules and Regulations, Chapter 4 Academic Standards and Assessment, including the development, implementation and monitoring of the strategic plan and the interpretation of state statues, State Board of Education rules and regulations for curriculum, assessment, instruction and mandated federal reports.
  • Conduct and coordinate district-wide research for evaluating and measuring the effectiveness of the total educational program, ensuring alignment with current trends in research-based best practices.
  • Provide direction regarding the District's educational and assessment program, determining comprehensive and representative samples of student achievement data and demographic information necessary for making reliable and effective decisions about student performance and school improvement planning.
  • Work with the CEO, principal, teacher, committees and the technology department in organizing and coordinating grade level and department meetings to ensure horizontal and vertical integration and articulation of the instructional program throughout the district.
  • Establish procedures for the evaluation and selection of educational programs and resources. Develop an action plan for curricular and instructional modifications and interventions that enhance student learning and improve academic performance.

Curriculum & Assessment

  • Establish and articulate a clear philosophy and shared vision of K-5 teaching and learning. Develop and implement a system-wide plan for curriculum review and improvement consistent with the established curricular philosophy and goals.
  • Administer tasks and activities of educational committees, upholding Board policies and promotes the District's mission and vision.
  • Assist with the planning of topics for discussion and review at the Curriculum Council and Curriculum Committee of the Board meetings, co-chair and monitor actions as needed.
  • Direct the development and editing of all text- and electronic-based curriculum guides and resource materials prepared for publication and distribution among the instructional staff.
  • Interpret the current curriculum and assessment program and present any proposed changes to the Board, the administration, the staff and the general public.
  • Direct and coordinate the planning and development and implementation of all local assessments. Direct and coordinate the reporting of the District's test data information.
  • Establish and monitor national, state and local assessment plan and revise to continually improve the effectiveness and efficiency of data collection, analysis and reporting (e.g. Performance Pathways, growth standard PVAAS or achievement results in PSSA such as GrowNet, e-Metric, etc.).
  • Provide direction to administrative and supervisory staff in identifying reliable and valid data sources for designing school improvement plans, intervention programs and for monitoring the impact and effects of instructional initiatives on student achievement.

Performance Evaluation and Human Resources

  • Supervise and appraise the performance of Curriculum Supervisors under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent.
  • Evaluate teacher/department heads' professional growth needs, roles and responsibilities, providing them with leadership in school and instructional program improvement.
  • Examine, evaluate and provide direction regarding the delivery of the District's curriculum, professional development programs and in-service activities for the professional education staff.
  • Conduct on-site visits to schools and offer insights for the enhancement of curriculum delivery and instructional practice.
  • Participate in staff selection and orientation processes. Provide support to improve staff performance (e.g., observations, consultations, meeting, etc.).
  • Contribute to the development and updating of new and existing job descriptions, interview questions and recommendation of appointments.

Professional Development

  • Direct and coordinate the planning and delivery of effective professional development and induction programs.
  • Direct and chair the District Professional Development Committee in the review, analysis and approval of professional development proposals.
  • Design and deliver professional development courses, institutes and approve other professional development requests (e.g., course-work, workshops, conferences, etc.).
  • Formulate and implement professional development (ACT 48) activities for all Title I and Local Education Association teachers to address curriculum, instruction and assessment goals and needs.
  • Establish procedures and processes and monitor the approval and reporting of Act 48 professional development actions and activities within the District's electronic management system (My Learning Plan).

Financial

  • Administer all budgetary functions relative to curriculum, instruction, and professional development, Federal Title I and Title III grants, and monitor for alignment with District and school improvement priorities.
  • Pursue funding opportunities. Prepare grant/foundation applications that encourage program innovations.
  • Pursue partnerships with university sponsored programs and other entities/organizations.
  • Approve the purchase of supplies, equipment and resources for assigned areas of responsibilities and ensures that program resources are equitably apportioned.

Communications

  • Assist with the District's internal and external public communications (e.g. school report card, annual report, etc.).
  • Assist with preparation of public relations materials (e.g. curriculum and promotional brochures, professional development and instructional videos, etc.).
  • Work with building-level staff to develop articles and presentations publicizing instructional programs and professional development activities.

Other

  • Pursues growth opportunities that enhance professional performance and advance District mission and vision.
  • Supervise collection, verification, and recording of program information as directed.
  • Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education Level: Master's Degree in Education; Doctorate preferred

License/Clearances: Must be able to obtain or currently have all background clearances (Federal, PA State, & Child Abuse).

Specific Skills: Experience in being a strong, progressive education leader with Executive and Supervisory management skills

Physical Demands: Requires sitting, standing, walking and moving throughout the district Ability to lift up to 10 lbs maximum and carry small items
