    Qualifications:
    • Valid Connecticut coaching certification.
    • Updated first aid/CPR training approved by Connecticut State Department of Education.
    • Completion of Module 15 – Concussion Management
    • Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
    • Has substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport.
    Reports to: The athletic director, who provides a final evaluation to the principal.
    Primary Functions: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success while at the same time helping the athlete to achieve an increased level of self-esteem, an appreciation for the values of sportsmanship and discipline.
    Major Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Has full responsibility for the overall supervision of his/her program including the junior varsity and freshman teams.
    • Is in charge of assignments and duties of assistant coaches working in his/her sport.
    • Is responsible for the general upkeep, protection, and inventory of the equipment and uniforms used in their sport including the junior varsity and freshman teams.
    • Is responsible for assuring that assistant coaches and himself/herself know the existing state and league regulations and at all times abide by them.
    • Assist the administrative assistant in providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events.
    • Attend all league meetings regarding scheduling and rule updates specific to their sport.
    • Responsible for developing their schedules for all levels of play.
    • Communicates all schedule changes to the athletic director or administrative assistant.
    • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment storage areas.
    • Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
    • Makes recommendations for awards, and is responsible for clarification of the award policy to athletes.
    • Is responsible for completing the duties listed on the “coaches checklist”.
    • Participates in the budgeting process with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season. Is responsible for explaining equipment guidelines as to type, color, style, or technical specifications. Is responsible for operating within the established budget.
    • Has a thorough knowledge of policies and procedures in the student-athlete handbook and CIAC handbook. Is responsible for explaining and reinforcing rules of training and code of conduct in the student-athlete handbook along with the CIAC eligibility rules to all members of the team.
    • Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by the staff.
    • Follows and has a good understanding of the basic NCAA recruiting rules for their specific sport.
    • Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ office, i.e.: permits athletes to only be in authorized area of the building at the appropriate times. Never leave athletes unsupervised during scheduled practices.
    • Examines locker rooms, equipment rooms and playing safe areas, before and after team use, checking of general cleanliness and safety.
    • Secures all doors, lights, windows, gates, locks, and alarm when leaving the building or outside facility when custodians are not on duty.
    • Will evaluate assistant coaches and program and submit necessary post season reports to the athletic director at the conclusion of the season.
    • Is responsible for the actions and conduct of team whenever they are under his/her jurisdiction.
    • Is responsible for the general health and welfare of student-athletes in his/her sport
    • Communicates instructions and commands using clear, simple, and positive language.
    • Pays appropriate attention to athletes who are injured or ill or otherwise incapacitated. Is responsible for following the protocol set by the athletic department in regards to injured athletes.
    • Organizes pre-season meetings for players and coaches.
    • Is in charge of evaluating performance of athletes and providing suitable feedback; balancing criticism with positive and motivating comments
    • Responsible for maintaining good public relations with media, parents, officials, opponents, and fans.
    • Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and use.
    • Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
    • Maintains current Connecticut coaching certification with the State of Connecticut Department of Education.
    • Performs other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the athletic director and/or principal.
