Position Purpose
- Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives, and to free certified professional employees from non-professional duties such as proctoring study halls to enable them to make a contribution to other aspects of the educational program, such as curriculum development.
Essential Job Functions

- Assists students with remedial and/or enrichment activities; reinforces instructional objectives introduced by the teacher; promotes a postitive learning enviroment.
- Offers assistant when students request or when behaviorbehavior suggests assistance is needed; uses tact when assisting children with problem-solving activities. .
- Supports an inclusive educational environment; assists students with disabilities to participate in appropriate learning activities as directed.
- Helps students use assistive and/or augmentative devices.
- Respects personal privacy; maintains confidentiality of privileged information..
- Takes precautions to ensure safety; does not leave students unsupervised..
- Watches for conduct that may indicate a problem; works with staff to teach acceptable behaviors.
- Maintains high standards and upholds the student conduct code; reports violations.
- Supervises student activities as directed (e.g., arrival/departure, lunch, recess, field trips, library, computer lab, etc.)
- Reports suspected child abuse and/or neglect as required by law.
- Participates in conferences and other required school activities.
- Participates in staff meetings and professional growth opportunities as directed.
- Strives to develop rapport with students and teachers and serves as a positive role model.
- Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.
Additional Duties:
- Assist guidance, pupil services staff or building administration, as needed.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Travel Requirements
- Travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required for certain positions.

- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
- Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
- Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Works in standard office and school building environments.
- Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.

Qualifications Profile
-Completed a Bachelors Degree from an acreddited college
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate through a formal State or local academic assessment –
(1) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics; or
(2) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in readiness for reading, writing and mathematics.
- A record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.
- Compliant with drug-free workplace rules and Board policies.
- Self-directed and able to learn required skills for the position.
- Ability to assist students with disabilities.
Preferred Education/Experience
- 1-2 years experience in a classroom setting in instruction and/or supervision of children
