Irrigation Laborer/Crew Member

Purpose

Installs, maintains and repairs pressurized irrigation systems; performs grounds maintenance duties; performs related work as required.

Performance Responsibilities

An employee in this position's main function is to participate in irrigation installation, maintain and repair pressurized irrigation systems on District properties. Duties include installing or revamping new and existing sprinkler systems; perform seasonal maintenance; operating a variety of hand tools and equipment; and assisting other Grounds personnel maintain lawns, landscaping, athletic fields, and parking lots, and undeveloped properties. This position regularly performs tasks wherever needed to maintain effective and efficient facilities and operations. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Irrigation Forman. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment, sometimes performing physically demanding and hazardous duties associated with operating equipment and moving heavy objects and dealing with adverse weather conditions.
Essential Duties

  • Addresses any sprinkler/irrigation emergency such as main line breaks or pump issues as outlined by Irrigation Foreman;
  • Cuts trenches, shovels, and moves dirt;
  • Assist in troubleshooting two wire systems and decoders to include: multimeter reading wire location equipment, and proper wire splicing techniques;
  • Assists grounds crew in the marking of fields for aeration and top-dressing programs;
  • Knowledge of irrigation products and irrigation equipment available in the industry;
  • Knowledge of various sprinkler heads and valves, controllers
  • Performs operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of automated irrigation systems, including lines and heads;
  • Studies specifications in blueprints, sketches, or landscape plans to determine materials required;
  • Initiates communication with Irrigation Foreman about needed repairs of status of projects;
  • Becomes Grounds Crew Member during off season of pruning and cleanup crews;
  • Work odd hours and perform snow removal duties during snow events;
  • Assist in winterizing all irrigation systems and backflows;
  • Perform other duties and/or tasks assigned by Department Supervisors & Irrigation Foreman.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to:

  • Assist in install, maintenance, and repair of pressurized irrigation systems;
  • Assist in troubleshooting and diagnosing sprinkler, mechanical and equipment problems; perform minor repairs;
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to grounds maintenance work;
  • Read and interpret blueprints, landscape plans, athletic field diagrams;
  • Lift, move and maneuver hand and power equipment safely;
  • Operate specialized equipment such as mini track hoes, tractors, and service vehicles;
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handling interruptions;
  • Work independently or as a team member;
  • Follow oral and written instructions and observe District policies and procedures;
  • Maintain confidentiality;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with District staff, students and other personnel, contractors, government representatives and others associated with job duties.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency;
  • Two (2) years’ experience in sprinkler design, installation, and repair; prefer three (3) years’ experience;
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform as an effective and competent irrigation technician;
  • Ability to pass an FBI background check;
  • Valid Idaho driver’s license required;

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits employee to communicate effectively in person, comprehend written and oral instructions and hear sounds within normal range of conversation and alarms;
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to view blueprints and plans, to observe grounds and structures to inspect and determine needed repairs and/or quality of completed work, to operate a motor vehicle and work-related equipment;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate all work-related equipment, operate a vehicle and work in confined spaces;
  • Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work in indoor and outdoor conditions, to stand or sit for extended periods of time and to perform skilled construction related tasks;
  • Jobs in this class require performing repetitive motions in fingering and hand/wrist/arm movements and standing for extended periods at a time. Related tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, lifting or moving up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally, walking over uneven surfaces or construction sites, working in confined spaces, climbing, or standing on ladders, crawling, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, or reaching.
