Overview

Carry out product design and development assignments as assigned. Prepares sketches and completes detail and layout drawings from verbal or written instructions on product with support from internal design and engineering resources. Participate on cross functional teams, working with Project Engineers, Industrial Design, and Product Marketing to propose component or subassembly designs that balance cost, performance, and reliability. Participates in the testing and validation processes for new products and competitive benchmarking. Performs fitment and compatibility activities for new products and new model vehicles. Various calculations such as strength of materials, simple forces and stresses, and weights may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Design components and subassemblies to specifications and schedules for new products, cost improvements, and other business objectives under direction from Project Engineer, Sr Product Design Engineer, Industrial Designer or other mentor.
  • Develops Computer Aided Design (CAD) models of parts and assemblies and uses Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software to optimize them for performance, quality and manufacturing.
  • Updates component designs under direction of project engineers and industrial designers to ensure safety, product performance and aesthetic intent are met.
  • Participate in the creation and validation of physical prototypes to prove out design concepts, design changes, etc.
  • Research and understand federal, industry and internal standards and applies basic understanding for designs to meet safety, compliance and performance requirements.
  • Execute design improvements for cost, manufacturability and/or quality improvements on legacy products as directed.
  • Develop layouts for medium scale programs to assist in the development of new products and/or sustaining engineering activities. This would include several concept options to full development of a solid model that represent ideas of the project team. 
  • Supports validation plan development and execution to confirm product performance to targets.
  • Supports delivery of milestones in accordance with WernerCo.’s new product development processes and milestones.
  • Participate in the execution of benchmarking testing plans including compiling and publishing results.
  • Perform annual fitment exercises to ensure compatibility of product with new automotive vehicle introductions.
  • Participate in sustaining projects on legacy products as directed including creation of derivative/line extensions, cost optimization and quality improvements.
  • Associate engineers will take direction primarily from sr. engineers or managers.
  • Understand and follow Quality Management System.

Qualifications

Experience & Education

  • BSME or similar
  • Basic skills in CAD (AutoCAD 2D and SolidWorks 3D preferred) and product design fundamentals.
  • Experience with MS Office Tools including Outlook, Excel and Word. MS Project a plus.
