The Role
The Associate General Counsel will serve as Wells Fargo's lead payments lawyer, and will manage a team of lawyers and paralegals counseling senior business and risk executives on enterprise payment strategies and deposit payment systems.
Specifically, this leader will:
  • Lead a team of legal professionals to provide risk-managed integrated business advice on emerging and existing payment systems with significant business impact for the enterprise and deposit payment business functions.
  • Thrive in a dynamic business and regulatory environment by merging deep subject matter expertise, sound risk management principles, and a commercial mindset.
  • Engage with external stakeholders and other third parties to facilitate the development and implementation of new and modified payment systems.
  • Assist Wells Fargo in evaluating legal and regulatory risks associated with new and existing payment business opportunities, including risks associated with federal and state rule making activities.
  • Serve on the leadership team of the CSBB & Enterprise Payments Division of the Wells Fargo Legal Department, reporting directly to the Division's Deputy General Counsel.
  • Balance the needs of the business growth initiatives with prudent risk management.
  • Serve as a contributing member of business and risk management committees.
The Candidate
The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate the leadership skill necessary to collaboratively build and lead a high-performing team of legal professionals to drive business results through leadership effectiveness and team member engagement; contributing to broad enterprise strategies with a One Wells Fargo lens; and furthering the Company's strong risk management culture by living the Expectations of Wells Fargo. This collaborative leader must be capable of initiating action and effectively managing change. The position requires a leader with strong relationship management, influencing, vision and execution skills. A key differentiator will be the ability to understand and operate successfully in a complex, heavily matrixed corporate environment. The role requires a sense of urgency, passion for excellence and results, and personal accountability for achievement and outcomes.
Required Qualifications, US:
  • 8 years of Legal experience, or equivalent experience demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 4 years of management experience
  • Active State Bar membership or the equivalent in a country outside the United States
Desired Qualifications:
  • Extensive payments legal experience, including deep understanding of relevant legal authorities and their application to emerging payments solutions.
  • Significant experience representing or operating within large, matrixed organizations providing general legal advice and support in connection with risk and regulatory topics.
  • Significant experience advising highly regulated clients, including working across the supervisory lifecycle of regulatory matters.
  • Experience with multi-party contract negotiation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and negotiating skills.
  • Experience leading and managing a team of legal professionals, with an emphasis on geographically dispersed teams.
  • Work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated understanding of complex business activities and operations.
  • Proven ability to create and sustain effective, influential, and trusted relationships with business and staff group leaders.
Pay Range
$249,500.00 - $518,300.00
