About the Role: 

Under supervision of the Manager of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Product Development Scientist will be involved in the development, designing, and performing and/or management of experiments to support Tarsus products’ development at various stages of their lifecycles. This individual will be responsible for formulation preparation and characterization, writing and reviewing of technical documents and reports, maintenance of lab instruments, and other general lab duties.

Let’s talk about some of the key responsibilities of the role:

  • Design and conduct formulation studies to support lead formulation selection.
  • Plan, direct, and execute drug product formulation & manufacturing process development activities in support of development of new products intended for preclinical evaluations, clinical trials, and commercialization with focus on sterile ophthalmic dosage forms.
  • Evaluate new raw materials, process equipment, and ancillary process supplies.
  • Contribute to development of drug product manufacturing processes and control strategies based on results from developmental studies and review relevant proposed manufacturing documents to ensure a high-quality product.
  • Coordinate with Tarsus team members within the company and Tarsus’ vendors to ensure timely availability of animal PK, toxicology and/or clinical supplies in line with business objectives and project timeline.
  • Ability to represent the company both internally and externally with both the scientific and business partners.
  • Planning and executing of experiments and interpreting analytical and process data (incl. statistical data analysis) using good scientific judgment.
  • Author and review internal notebook entries documenting lab work in timely manner and treat data with a high level of integrity and ethics.
  • Review internal and external technical documents and author technical memos, scientific presentations, and reports.
  • Complete trainings assigned by the Quality department as part of being a GxP employee in a timely manner.

Factors for Success:

  • Bachelor/ MS/ PhD in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or related fields
  • A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of hands-on laboratory experience in pharmaceutical product development.
  • Investigative and implementation skills.
  • Experience with a combination of the following: pre-formulation, formulation, process development, scale-up and optimization from laboratory scale to pilot scale.
  • Experience with a wide range of formulations, in-depth familiarity with Topical Ophthalmic dosage form and Sterile dosage form (optional).
  • Familiarity with analytical methodology used for characterization of drug substance and drug product properties.
  • Understanding of other disciplines related to Pharmaceutical Development.
  • Productive working practices to generate consistent high-quality data.
  • Keeps abreast of and implements state of the art pharmaceutical methodology and technology.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams under defined timelines. Time management skill is critical.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that allow productive interactions internally across departments and externally.
  • Skilled at presenting data and strategy in scientific settings and team meetings.
  • Experience and training in GMPs, INDs and other regulatory requirements (plus).
  • Experience with management of outsourced projects at contract manufacturers (plus).

At Tarsus, we understand the importance of attracting and retaining top talent. The expected base pay range for this position is $90,000 - $126,000 plus bonus, stock equity, and comprehensive benefits. The base pay range reflects the target range for this position, but individual pay will be determined by additional factors such as job-related skills, experience and relevant education or training.
