The Production & Editing Systems Engineer role provides technical support and design consulting for all new production and editing systems as needed by Weather Group Television and its related businesses, and applies a holistic approach to meeting strategic objectives through streamlining the production and technical process. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Production & Editing Systems Engineer to expand their skills in a large production and editing facility. We welcome candidates who want to work in a strong team atmosphere and who can think creatively while managing within budgets. This position will be responsible for production, and editing system support, assisting technical projects from inception to completion, and working with internal project customers to define technical project needs and requirements. The Production & Editing Systems Engineer will also work with our installation group and engineering staff to commission new systems.

The Production & Editing Systems Engineer will be assigned administration of key television production, editing and graphics technology, participate in engineering group projects, assist in project design reviews submitted by design engineering resources, and will partner on efforts to make sure all document and technical standards are supported and met. They will troubleshoot technical issues by utilizing a solid knowledge of a mixed use environment of digital, SDI/IP, Premier/Apple based editing systems, and IMR technology and will provide key systems engineering support. 

The Production & Editing Systems Engineer may be occasionally called on to help support other maintenance team members on engineering support duties related to projects they have supported or systems they administer. 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical and customer support for engineering, broadcast, OTT, editing, and production facilities related departments within The Weather Channel Atlanta facility. 
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of television broadcast and production equipment located within TWC’s Atlanta Broadcast Facility.
  • At times, may act as the Engineer-On-Duty, and will carry a company provided cell phone in order to be contacted for emergency issues.
  • Performs checks of critical production and editing equipment to ensure operational performance meets required specified standards.
  • Monitors and corrects or improves the quality of the video/audio/data signal for the Weather Group Television production facility.
  • Acts as System Administrator on critical editing and production systems.
  • Maintains basic knowledge and operational details for the TWC transmission paths, and may occasionally communicate with TWC’s uplink provider.
  • Maintains departmental records which include, but are not limited to Engineering Shift Logs, Engineering Service Request forms, parts and equipment inventories, equipment maintenance & repair histories, and system drawings.
  • Ensures that system and equipment documentation is current and implements processes to continuously review and improve documentation.
  • Specifies, demonstrates, and evaluates new production and editing equipment.
  • Proactively communicates the status of engineering issues to Engineering Management and Broadcast Engineering customers.
  • Works as a part of a team to continually develop and improve processes used to support Broadcast Engineering customers.
  • Accepts new assignments and technological projects as required by an ever changing dynamic broadcasting environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Minimum of two years technical training and a minimum of 6 years experience in supporting production editing systems, conference technologies, production tools, and analog/digital video and audio systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in troubleshooting and repairing high end Apple/Adobe Premier based editing systems, production servers, file conversion systems, and file based workflow systems.
  • Is proficient in the use of related test equipment including, but not limited to waveform monitors, vectorscopes, multimeters, oscilloscopes, test signal generators, spectrum analyzers, data and network analyzers etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work in a multitasking environment.
  • Must be able to lead a team to successful task or project completion.
  • Must be a self-starter and be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to lift and move equipment as required.

Experience:

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in troubleshooting and repairing the following equipment or systems is required:

  • Adobe Premiere editing systems. 
  • Apple and Windows based editing systems.
  • Central Server editing environments.
  • Remote editing environments.

Desired knowledge and experience in supporting the following equipment or systems is a plus:

  • GVG Morpheus Master Control Automation Systems.
  • Evertz EXE & EQXRouter Systems.
  • GVG Video Production Switchers.
  • Lawo Professional Audio Consoles.
  • Video Over IP distribution and Switching Systems.
  • 2110 Video Standards.
  • Harmonic playout server systems.
  • VizRt shared graphics systems.
  • Digital conference room systems.

Knowledge of Video Compression, Video Over IP compression technology, and digital transmission technology.

 Behavior:

  • Demonstrates a strong desire to continually increase technical and operational proficiency of key equipment and systems used in TWC’s Broadcast Facility.
