Responsible for teaching students about the past—specifically, the events, people and cultures that have shaped our world. Cover topics such as ancient civilizations, medieval Europe, the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, colonialism, the Civil War and other major historical events. Must be able to effectively communicate complex ideas in a way that is easily understood by your students. Able to inspire your students to learn more about the subject on their own after class ends.

A high school history teacher typically has a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

• Creating lesson plans that align with state standards and academic guidelines for the state in which they teach
• Preparing for class by reviewing lecture notes, textbooks, and other materials
• Running classroom discussions and activities that encourage students to think critically about historical events
• Preparing students for state history exams by reviewing course material and providing test preparation materials such as flash cards or study guides
• Assigning homework and grading students' work to assess their understanding of key historical concepts, terminology, and events
• Explaining difficult concepts in a way that is easy for students to understand
• Helping students develop research skills by introducing them to primary sources and guiding them through the research process
• Communicating regularly with parents about their child's progress and performance in class
• Teaching social studies methodology, including research methods, historical analysis, and cultural awareness
