Position Summary
The objective of the Student Success Program (SSP) is to support students academically, socially, and emotionally—above and beyond the scope of offerings within the traditional academic program at Wayland. The Academic Coach assists Wayland students to develop proper study habits, build a conceptual understanding of subject-related content, support teachers to meet learning strategies, and promote the services of the SSP.
Wayland Academy faculty are much more than teachers; they play a crucial role in the students’ lives and their success. As such, faculty at Wayland Academy serve as teacher, coach, mentor, and dorm supervisor.
Responsibilities essential to this position include:
  • Teaching/Academic Support:
  • Meet with students individually to discuss study skills and strategies needed for success, with a focus on math and English
  • Monitor student progress throughout each semester
  • Participate in mandatory training prior to the start of the position and continuous professional development meetings
  • Hold or support study group sessions
  • Hold office hours and support SSP endeavors
  • Participate in class meetings to support all students
  • Prepare material and activities for study group sessions and classroom support in collaboration with subject teachers
  • Represent the SSP at various functions throughout campus
  • Publicize, promote, and develop outreach to students regarding academic coaching
  • Communicate with mentors about issues, schedules, and/or outcomes
  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the SSP
  • Coaching: Faculty are assigned two extra-curricular sports or activities to coach per school year. These responsibilities may be reassigned to non-curricular duties at the discretion of the Head of School. Coaches are expected to develop and deliver safe and comprehensive extracurricular opportunities in adherence with the Wayland Academy Coaches and Advisors Handbook and any other applicable governing bodies (e.g. WIAA, etc.). Coaches are to adhere to the expectations as set forth by the Athletic Director and Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Innovation.
  • Mentoring: Faculty are assigned a small group of students to provide them with academic and social-emotional support in addition to fostering home to school connections. Mentors are expected to monitor grades, course enrollments, and other benchmarks of academic advancement and achievement for their mentees. They are to provide counsel and guidance as necessary and appropriate to support their mentees’ social and emotional wellbeing. Mentors also serve as a primary connection between Wayland Academy and the mentees’ family via regular communication about the student’s academic, extracurricular, and social emotional progress and wellbeing. Mentors adhere to the expectations as set forth by the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Innovation and Dean of Students.
  • Dorm Supervisor: Faculty supervise residential dorms one night a week and one weekend a month during the academic year. While supervising, the faculty will follow the policies and procedures set forth by the Dean of Students, the employee handbook, and the student handbook.
Wayland Academy expects all members of the academic staff to be fully engaged in the school’s life and mission, in and out of the classroom. To that end, faculty are expected to take meals in the dining hall, participate in Wayland Academy community events and to, in general, be a positive role model for students.
Core Competencies
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills (communication, problem-solving, collaboration, etc.) to provide advice, feedback, mentoring, and coaching
  • Ability to engage students in and outside the classroom, helping all students achieve their fullest academic and leadership potential
  • Enthusiasm and dedication to contributing to our healthy learning community, energetically supporting colleagues, sharing ideas and resources, and being there for others
  • Accepting and supportive attitude that encourages diverse perspectives and productive risk-taking to challenge students to think and explore opportunities that allow them to become their best
