Compensation:

In accordance with California law, the expected salary range for this position is posted with this position. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.

Role Summary:

The primary purpose of your job position is to organize, plan and implement orientation and mobility services to blind and visually impaired clients. This position reports directly to the Manager of Adult Services.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assesses each client’s orientation and mobility skills and develops an Individual Service Plan (ISP) to address the client’s individual orientation and mobility needs.
• Develops and carries out a program of individualized instruction that may include pre-cane skills, cane skills, indoor travel, street crossings, travel in a small business district, downtown travel, and use of public transportation.
• Emphasizes the effective use of any residual vision, tactile and other sensory modes, and reinforces learning associated with other areas of instruction.
• Makes careful observations and evaluations concerning clients’ progress and maintains detailed tracking notes. Prepares narrative reports as required as well as Measurable Outcome documentation.
• Cooperates and consults with other staff members and appropriate community resources on behalf of the client. Is an integral member of the rehabilitation team coordinating orientation and mobility skills training with other client services.
• Participates in departmental and agency-wide planning and evaluation functions. Makes recommendations concerning orientation and mobility skills training and future planning.
• Participates in the public education function of the agency as needed.
• Maintains a working knowledge of local and national resources and of significant trends in the field of blind education and rehabilitation through review of the literature and participation in seminars.
• Assists with training volunteers; supervises volunteers in jurisdiction; assists with in-services.
• Performs follow-up in specific area of devices prescribed for improvement of distance vision as used for mobility purposes.

Qualifications

Education/Certifications:

• Master's degree in orientation and mobility from an accredited college or university required.
• Within one year of hire obtain certification through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist.

Experience:

• A Minimum of two years of teaching experience or working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
• Knowledge of all areas of adaptive equipment for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
• Valid CA Driver License with a minimum of two (2) years good driving history and must be approved by the agency’s insurance carrier to drive agency vehicles.
