The School District of Waukesha is seeking a Middle School Assistant Principal who expresses a powerful education mission through action. Horning Middle School has a school-wide house model to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of learners as well as having an Advisory each morning to connect with students. Horning also is a schoolwide AVID and PBIS school. An interest in working with diverse students and families is required.

SUMMARY​: The principal serves as the educational leader at the building level and is responsible for creating and maintaining a positive, safe, and innovative learning environment for all students and staff. In addition to a continuous pursuit of educational excellence, the Principal is responsible for supervising building staff, managing resources in accordance with District policies, and creating educational opportunities for the school community to maximize student growth and achievement.
EXAMPLES / DUTIES​:
  • Provides administrative leadership and actions around vision, goal setting, cultivating learning, ensuring excellence and communicating results.
  • Provides leadership to the school community in developing and focusing on a shared vision, mission, goals, and continuous school improvement planning consistent with the District vision and goals.
  • Ensures the effective delivery of an instructional program that meets the needs of all students.
  • Provides leadership in the ongoing process of recruiting, selecting, developing, managing, and retaining high performing leaders, teachers and staff dedicated to maintaining a positive school culture and climate, and directing the improvement of educational programming.
  • Provides leadership in the analysis of current programs and student achievement results and the integration of this analysis into curriculum development activities aligned with District/School goals.
  • Provides leadership to the creation and maintenance of positive, safe, and orderly learning environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
  • Makes principled decisions in a timely manner and appropriately involves others in the process.
  • Effectively responds to and resolves issues that arise in and outside the school environment that affects the successful operation of the school and student programming.
  • Models good human relations skills and interacts positively with all facets of the school community.
  • Actively participates in a variety of meetings within the school, District, neighborhood, and community in a manner that effectively integrates the school into the fabric of the community.
  • Communicates effectively with parents and involves them in aspects of the school.
  • Facilitates collaborative partnerships with outside agencies and businesses that promote a positive learning environment for all students.
  • Supports and promotes special activities in the building that contribute to a positive and comprehensive school experience for the school community.
  • Provides leadership and coordination to all staff development activities in the building, ensuring the alignment of these activities with building­based school improvement areas.
  • Supervises and evaluates all faculty and staff assigned to the building and effectively addresses all performance issues in a manner consistent with District policy and practice.
  • Participates in interviews and recommends for hire all staff assigned to the building.
  • Plans, develops, implements, and monitors a school budget consistent with collaboratively identified building goals and improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinates building maintenance in cooperation with the District maintenance department.
  • Models the culturally responsive practices.
  • Participates in professional development that aligns with the mission/vision of the district.
  • Engages stakeholders as appropriate to gather feedback.
  • Performs other duties deemed appropriate and assigned by the Administrative Services.
QUALIFICATIONS​ To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Valid Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) license or evidence of eligibility to be licensed, as a Principal (51).
  • Master's Degree in Educational Administration or the equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and oral presentations.
  • Prior experience in providing leadership in an educational environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, articulate and evaluate high leverage strategies consistent with current knowledge and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply technology in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:​
  • Knowledge of the work being done at The Institute at CESA #1 around Personalized Learning.
  • Extensive knowledge of innovative instructional methods and strategies to improve student performance.
  • Advanced computer literacy skills including integration of teaching and learning technologies.
  • Commitment to developing and maintaining a school culture focused on students' best interest in academic performance as well as social and emotional development.
  • Interpersonal skills that promote collaboration, professionalism, and relationship building.
  • Understanding of diversity as an integral component of the school's organizational systems.
  • Current knowledge of theory and practice in special education programming, including inclusion, discipline, IEP development and implementation, and IDEA Re­authorization.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and establish priorities for action in conjunction with others.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents, federal, state, and/or DPI regulations, handbooks, computer and other manuals, budget reports and statistical data.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate reports, procedures, and computer applications to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to communicate/present effectively in both oral and written form.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to statistically manipulate numbers; make advanced mathematical calculations; check for accuracy.
  • Ability to manage the school budget, attending to annual budgeting, and ongoing budgeting responsibilities.
REASONING ABILITY:
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments and decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in an atmosphere of multiple and conflicting demands.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and effectively solve problems.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions with several abstract and concrete variables.
