Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is Hiring a Community Service Officer - Neighborhood Watch Near Ann Arbor, MI

JOB SUMMARY

This position supports deputies, corrections officers and other Sheriff’s Office operations in the performance of their various duties by relieving them of routine organizational duties, allowing them to increase the amount of time spent on enforcement, prevention and inmate management activities. They respond to requests for service when such requests are of a minor nature, and are not emergencies, do not require use of force or arrest authority, and do not otherwise require the expertise and training of a sworn Deputy Sheriff or Correction Officer.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities include by way of example but not limitation:

  • Neighborhood Watch:
  • Attend Neighborhood Watch meetings on a consistent basis.
  • Provide analysis and documentation for Neighborhood Watch groups and participants to promote community education, safe neighborhoods, and safe driving.
  • Initiate new Neighborhood Watch groups.
  • Coordinate Neighborhood Watch groups, meetings and activity with Sheriff’s Office community engagement activities, and other positive community initiatives.
  • In partnership with various elements of the community and law enforcement, identify and address crime and crime related issues and problems throughout Ypsilanti Township, including identifying and addressing root causes.
  • Work directly with various law enforcement units to address crime and crime related problems.
  • Share data and information with command, road patrol and investigators to help accurately focus agency resources.
  • Organize, attend, and engage in community events.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the Operational Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Township Officials.
  • Promote activities that support safe driving throughout Ypsilanti Township including organizing and supporting the Safe Routes to Schools Initiative.
  • Maintain, build upon, and utilize the Everbridge alert system and other social media.
  • Maintain contact with local police agencies in nearby communities for crime trends and other pertinent information through direction of the Ypsilanti Township Sergeant or Operational Lieutenant.
  • Coordinate with and/or work as a part of the Community Engagement Division focusing on crime and crime related issues and their root causes.
  • A demonstrated ability to:

  • Communicate with and work constructively and effectively with all facets of the community and segments of society.

  • Work in a team atmosphere with other members of the agency, other law enforcement agencies and other social justice and human service agencies.
  • Work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Apply innovative solutions to community crime problems, conduct comprehensive investigations and write complete and thorough reports.
  • Write complete, comprehensive, and timely police and administrative reports.

Work Schedule

  • The work schedule is based upon the overall needs of the organization, the community, and the assignment; is flexible and may change with limited notice. Variables include but are not limited to criminal activity, the volume and status of investigations, crime patterns and trends, and the scheduling of various community events.
  • As this is an on-call assignment with an expectation of rapid response to criminal activity and investigative needs. The assigned CSO must have the willingness and ability to respond to after-hours calls or callouts to include weekends and holidays.
  • The Sheriff’s Office reserves the right to alter work hours and leave days as deemed necessary to support the organization, community, assignment, and Sheriff’s Office and unit mission needs.

EXAMPLES OF GENERAL COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER DUTIES

  • Performs detailed, varied and responsible office support work, which may require the exercise of independent judgment and the application of knowledge related to the department to which assigned.
  • Must skillfully interact with the public utilizing good interpersonal communications techniques.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work, including the public, other agencies, and County staff.
  • Provides information and assistance to citizens, answers telephones, takes reports, completes gun registrations or other permits, takes fingerprints, files paperwork or prepares other documents as necessary, picking up and delivering mail.
  • May be assigned to transport vehicles, or paperwork between stations or to and from other locations.
  • Directs traffic and issues parking tickets.
  • Canvasses neighborhoods for crime leads, as well as assisting in crime prevention activities as assigned.
  • Handles animal control requests, including picking up and transporting stray animals, completing animal bite reports, and issuing citations for violation of related law.
  • Completes initial booking inquiries regarding inmates’ personal information including, basic personal history, financial status, current mental and physical health status, and utilize screening instruments to identify inmate risk and needs.
  • Coordinates and oversees inmate visitation by assisting citizens with system registration and general oversight and monitoring of video visitation. •Responds to a variety of customer calls by telephone regarding business-related issues such as inmate information, billing and court procedures.
  • Accepts and processes forms, verifies for completeness, may accept payments and provide an appropriate receipt.
  • Organizes and maintains various files; locates information as required for the work of the department; tracks the issuance of official documents; may purge files and/or prepare information for long-term storage.
  • Researches and assembles information from a variety of sources for the completion of forms or the preparation of reports; may make arithmetic, statistical or payroll calculations.
  • Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports using an on-line or personal computer system; may operate and maintain databases or other automated files and systems. Maintains confidentiality of data processed.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports, forms, and specialized documents from drafts, notes, dictated tapes, or brief instructions using a typewriter or word processor; may compose standard correspondence independently and have the ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instruction.
  • May be called upon to assist the trustees in the performance of routine facility maintenance, such as emptying wastepaper baskets, shoveling snow from walkways or other general cleaning tasks.
  • Duties necessary to facilitate the general operation of the Department and provide support for other employees.
  • Assignments to other units, sections or divisions within the Department as needed for the overall good of the organization and its efficient operation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to work at any designated work site.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test that screens for illegal controlled substances.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment data entry test.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation and psychological evaluation.
  • Must meet qualifications to be a Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) operator.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

The Sheriff’s Office is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day public safety operation. Work schedules will vary and include nights, weekends, holidays and unanticipated overtime. The position involves work in law enforcement, corrections and public safety settings. Areas of assignments may change periodically or with limited notice depending upon the overall need and good of the Sheriff’s Office. The Neighborhood watch assignment's work schedule is as follows:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Duties require a basic level of physical fitness, general health and mobility including but not limited to the ability to run, lift, and carry or move reasonable weight and objects for reasonable distances. Ability to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment and technology including by way of example but not limited to computers, copiers, and calculators. Vision, normal or corrected, must include the ability to read from printed materials and a VDT screen. Hearing and speech must be sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.

EDUCATION

Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent. Basic or advanced technical training, coursework, or certificates related to the job are desirable. Various combinations of education and experience which could provide an equivalent level of knowledge and skills to perform the job will be considered.

A variety of combinations of experience which could provide knowledge, skills, and abilities which support the performance of the job will be considered. Experience working in a criminal justice setting, government organization, the public, elected officials and community groups is desirable.
