WASHOE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT PROFESSIONAL INTERN

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

We are looking for highly motivated interns to support Washoe County School District in day-to-day professional administrative tasks and activities. Under direction of the WCSD Director of Research and Evaluation, receives training for highly responsible, complex and diversified clerical, administrative, and technical support functions. Practical experience in course of study, shadowing, mentoring, and training opportunities with seasoned professionals. Compensation available.

Incumbent performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTISTICS

This is a special classification for students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to Washoe County School District Business, Human Resources, Data and Research, and Information Technology operations and functions.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES

  • Understands the overall concept of Washoe County School District, the mission, strategic plan, and assigned department goals.
  • Complete a variety of assignments related to a particular function, applying principles and practices of a professional course of study, to assist with the operations and functions of an assigned area of Washoe County School District.
  • Compile data and analyze findings relating to an assigned project.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment and technical tools related to job assignments.
  • Communicate with members of the general public, officials from other agencies and community groups to gather information necessary to complete assignments and projects.
  • Incumbents may also function as a subject matter expert, providing sensitive and detailed program information to district employees and officials, the general public, and/or public jurisdictions as a significant part of the job.
  • Applies a thorough and detailed knowledge of the appropriate laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the department or program; gives information regarding the special and/or technical program to district personnel, service providers, vendors and/or the general public.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Willing to learn and receive hands-on experience.
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
  • Willing to commit 19 hours per week to be physically present at the facility.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge skills would be:

  • Enrollment in an accredited college or university in pursuit of a bachelor's degree is required. Course work, prior or current, must include a minimum of 3 units pertinent to the operations of the hiring department with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

OR

  • Enrollment in a recognized master's degree program. Course work, prior or current, must include a minimum of 3 units pertinent to the operations of the hiring department.

Knowledge of: Principles, methods and problems of organization and management with particular reference to government functions and operations. Principles and techniques of data collection and summary reporting.

Skill at: Working independently; critical reasoning/thinking, understanding, interpreting, and applying laws, rules as they relate to specialty area(s); Operate a personal computer and a variety of software packages, proficient in Microsoft Office, gathering and analyzing data; preparing clear, concise narrative and statistical reports, records, and correspondence; performing complex clerical and technical work; typing with speed and accuracy; evaluating situations accurately and taking effective courses of action; exercising tact, judgment and strategy with a variety of people and a variety of situations; reading and writing English at a level required for successful job performance; principles and practice of supervision; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Licenses/Certificates: None required.

Physical Demands: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Work Environment: The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

Sch B: $19.28 (entry step)
Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position.

Additional Job Information

This position is contingent upon continued funding on a fiscal year-to-year basis. The hiring administrator may retain incumbent for the duration of the assignment without re-advertising.

INCENTIVES

Eligible employees of WCSD receive different benefits depending on their scheduled hours per week.

Eligible Employees who regularly work less than 20 hours per week receive Social Security benefits, salary increases, longevity bonuses, and credit union benefits.

Eligible Employees who regularly work 20 to 24.75 hours per week receive PERS retirement benefits, which are lifetime pension plans for public employees in various states,

In addition to the benefits above. Eligible Employees who regularly work 25 to 27.25 hours per week receive all the benefits above except medical, dental, and vision insurance.

Eligible Employees who regularly work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full benefits of the district, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, holiday pay, vacation pay, sick leave, life insurance, and insurance premiums for summer months.

Beginning July 1,2023: If you are enrolling in our health insurance plan and submit all proper documentation, you should know that there is no waiting period, your medical, dental, vision and life insurance will become effective on your first contracted work day.

All eligible employees also enjoy no state income tax and no Social Security deductions for most positions working 20 hours per week or more.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.
