Washington State Department of Ecology is Hiring a Sound supervisor Near Buckley, WA

Duties

The (SEA) program helps communities manage shorelands and wetlands. Our primary focus is on state and local responsibilities for administering Washington state and federally-delegated laws.

Our mission is to work in partnership with communities to support healthy watersheds and promote statewide environmental interests.

The program's (WCC) section is looking to fill Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) Crew Supervisor 1 positions located across the State of Washington.

This is a project position that is funded until September 30, 2025. Once the next 3-year grant is awarded, this project will be extended.

This posting will be used to fill vacancies in our North Puget Sound region which includes the following counties : King, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties and is open continuous.

This position will supervise a crew of Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) members in the performance of natural resource assignments.

As a supervisor, you may lead the following projects : 1) Habitat Enhancement : environmental restoration, wetland mitigation, in-stream salmon recovery work, etc.

2) Recreational Enhancement : Campground upgrades and maintenance, front and back country trail construction and maintenance, boardwalk installation, etc.

3) Combination : Many WCC crews work on both project types, depending on the season.

As a leading AmeriCorps program with a nationally recognized disaster response program, WCC supervisors may also lead deployments to local and national disasters.

  • Reviews, plans and assigns work tasks for corps members in completing conservation projects.
  • Manages the completion of projects. This includes monitoring the use of materials, communicating with project sponsor on progress, and assigning tasks to individual members.
  • Performs evaluations of corps members. Gives clear feedback on past performance and expectations for future performance and career objectives.

Documents performance issues and makes recommendations for disciplinary action.

  • Interviews and makes selections of new corps members.
  • Completes and turns in necessary paperwork such as timesheets, travel logs, credit card logs & receipts, safety reports, AmeriCorps forms, hiring and termination forms, evaluations and production reports.
  • Ensures that equipment is being used safely and makes sure all equipment is properly maintained.
  • Drives vehicle and ensures that it is being maintained.
  • Operates small power tools, such as chain saws, weed-eaters, drills, augers, laser transits and others.
  • Operates state owned / leased vehicles, usually four wheel drive pick-up trucks.
  • Uses hand tools, such as shovels, hoes, rakes, hammers and axes.
  • Works on steep inclines for long periods of time.
  • Walks several miles per day in rough terrain.
  • Lifts 60 pounds repetitively for long periods of time.

Working Conditions - t his position often requires :

  • Overnight travel to accomplish assignments.
  • Work in excess of 40 hours per week.
  • Working in inclement weather.
  • Rough terrain and wilderness areas.
  • Lifts 60 pounds repetitively for extended periods of time.
  • Consecutive days of work up to eight (8) days in travel status.
  • Deployment to natural disaster areas in an emergency response capacity for up to 30 consecutive days.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications :

An Associate's degree in Environmental Science or Studies, Forestry, or closely related field, and one (1) year of experience as a WCC crew member or work that includes emergency response to natural disasters, hazardous spills, firefighting, and / or habitat restoration.

Satisfactory completion of a two-year Forest Technology Vocational Program and one (1) year of WCC field experience.

Three (3) years of experience equivalent to WCC field work, young adult mentorship, or leadership.

Qualifying military experience can substitute, year for year, for field experience.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Experience in the supervision and training of employees, natural resource conservation and maintenance work, and the use of a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Wilderness First Aid Certification.
  • Pesticide Operators License.
  • Wild land Firefighter Red Card.
  • ICS 300.
  • NIMS 700.

Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment :

  • Must possess a WA State Driver's License and provide a driver's license abstract upon hire.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer's responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses / certifications are obtained for each position.
