Job Description

THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF

ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or possession a general equivalency diploma (GED)

Experience

Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

  • Sign Fabricator “AA”
    • A minimum of six (6) years’ experience performing satisfactorily the duties of a Sign Fabricator or related field

Certification/Licensure

  • A valid motor vehicle operator's permit issued from jurisdiction of residence

Mission Essential Designation

  • In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

Summary

The Sign Fabricator is responsible for industrial sign layout, design, development and highly technical fabrication work. The Sign Fabricator is expected to produce signs and illustrations in various sizes, colors, surfaces and materials that are in compliance with standards as outlined in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrorail System Signage Design Manual.

Job Levels: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

Essential Functions

  • Studies specifications, sketches or other descriptions of signs to be created or replaced and plans the computer numerical control (CNC) sequence of operations applying knowledge of sign fabrication, shop, mathematics, paint and surface properties and layout procedures.
  • Measures, marks and scribes dimensions and reference points to lay out signs for WMATA RAIL, BUS and support facilities. Verifies dimensions and alignments with measuring instruments and ensures established standards and requirements are met. Designs, lays out and fabricates complex signs and illustrations.
  • Fabricates, repairs, refurbishes and refinishes defective signs and directories following layout procedures and shop mathematics. Uses various vinyl plotters, large format and solvent printers, engraving and CNC routers, and Gerber design software and equipment.
  • Installs signs throughout the Rail and Bus systems. Works from scaffolding and ladders and operates portable power tools, man lifts and other tools and equipment required for installation.
  • Uses proper forms and completes required documentation and reports regarding the installation, maintenance or modification of signs and directories. Prepares requisitions for parts and materials from supply storerooms and vendors. Ensures that equipment, systems and associated mechanical devices are maintained accordingly to manufacturers requirements and WMATA’s standards.
  • Attends and passes the required safety training classes and continuously learns industry best practices for working safely and efficiently. Performs assignments according to WMATA safety requirements.

Other Functions

  • May develop proposed specifications from general descriptions and draw or sketch requested signage or modifications.
  • Supports emergency response efforts to protect people and assets. Responds to and provides assistance during severe weather emergencies to ensure safety requirements are met or exceeded.
