Position Summary

The Student Success Lecturer is a critical part of strategic efforts to get every Washburn student on a pathway to success during their First Year of studies.

The Student Success Lecturer teaches multiple sections of the First-Year Experience course, as well as other courses such as Major and Career Exploration, that equip students with the knowledge, skills, and habits required to achieve academic success.

The instruction provided by the Student Success Lecturer is a key component of a comprehensive plan to improve learning, retention, and on-time graduation. This is a month position.

Essential Functions :

  • Teach assigned courses in accordance with approved course descriptions and syllabi
  • Help First-Year students successfully transition from high school to college by building the knowledge, skills, and habits required to achieve academic success
  • Maintain reasonable availability for meeting with students outside of class
  • Promote student engagement in the broader university community
  • Identify potential retention concerns among individual students and collaborate with faculty, staff, administrators, and the student to connect them to campus resources
  • Maintain accurate student records and submit timely student performance data to the Center for Student Success and Retention
  • Use Washburn’s student success software to manage student alerts, appointments, progress reports, referrals, and communications
  • Lead a teaching team of up to five members in First-Year Experience courses. As Lead Faculty, conduct weekly meetings with the teaching team to provide leadership on student success philosophy, and to leverage the strengths of the teaching team to address student retention concerns in a timely manner
  • Assist the Director of First Year Experience in the training and mentoring of Peer Educators
  • Maintain awareness of best practices that support student retention, particularly in First-Year Experience programs
  • Assist the Center for Student Success with summer programming as needed
  • Teach up to credit hours per semester as assigned

Performs additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Required Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Experience teaching at a secondary level or higher
  • Proven ability to build and maintain professional relationships with students and colleagues from diverse populations
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate, with a wide range of individuals and constituencies (students, colleagues, administrators, and families)

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Doctoral degree
  • One or more years of experience teaching at the postsecondary level
  • Experience working in First-Year Experience programs, or similar transition programs
  • Experience designing and managing courses using course management systems
  • Bi-lingual capability (Spanish)
