    Security Officer
    Job Summary: Monitors activities to maintain a safe and orderly school environment. Duties may vary based on shift and building.
    Essential Job Functions:
    The following are typical work responsibilities. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.
    • Upholds safety regulations. Patrols assigned areas to maintain a high profile. Proactively identifies security issues. Keeps building administrators informed about emerging issues.
    • Greets the public. Responds to requests for information. Directs visitors to the office.
    • Watches for student behavior that may indicate a problem (e.g., profanity, teasing, bullying, distress, etc.). Intervenes and/or reports concerns to an administrator.
    • Responds to requests for assistance. Documents all security incidents and/or injuries.
    • Does not permit students to loiter. Verifies that students have permission to be in hallways or other areas during scheduled class periods.
    • Upholds board policies and follows administrative guidelines/procedures. Promotes a professional image of the school district. Supports community partnerships that enhance district programs.
    • Promotes effective communications and assistance. Uses problem-solving techniques to tactfully address questions/concerns. Refers policy interpretation inquiries to administrative staff.
    • Assists with crime prevention presentations (DARE classes, parent groups, in-service activities, etc.).
    • Monitors activities on adjoining properties. Documents and reports risk factors (e.g., loitering, graffiti, equipment malfunctions, property loss/damage, etc.).
    • Upholds the student conduct code. Maintains high expectations for behavior and performance. Exercises caution when physical restraint is required.
    • Maintains effective relationships with community law enforcement officers.
    • Follows established protocols to request police intervention.
    • Promotes the proper use, care, and security of school property. Reports discipline problems, vandalism, graffiti, equipment malfunctions, and other related concerns.
    • Monitors building systems to ensure that equipment is operating properly. Reports problems (e.g., unusual odors, noises, leaks, power failures, etc.).
    • Secures doors and windows. Activates alarms systems as directed.
    • Ensures that clear routes are maintained to emergency exits. Assists with building evacuations during emergencies.
    • Directs traffic and assists with crowd control during public events.
    • Maintains accurate records and submits reports on time.
    • Complies with district policy and administrative guidelines/procedures to account for fund raising activities and the collection of authorized student fees. Maintains detailed records suitable for financial audit.
    • Respects personal privacy. Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.
    • Reports suspected child abuse and/or neglect to civil authorities as required by law.
    • Participates in staff meetings and professional growth opportunities as directed.
    • Strives to develop rapport and serves as a positive role model for others.
    • Maintains a professional appearance. Wears work attire appropriate for the position.
    • Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.
    Minimum Qualifications:
    • High school diploma.
    • Current employment with a local or state law enforcement organization.
    • Completion of a state-accredited security training program.
    • Documentation of a clear criminal record.
    • Satisfactory drug screening, physical fitness, and psychological assessment profile.
    • Available to work a flexible schedule (i.e., alternate shifts, weekends/holidays, etc.).
    • Valid driver's license. Meets all prerequisite and ongoing qualifications to be covered by the district's insurance carrier.
    • Successful completion of communicable disease, child abuse/neglect, behavioral management, CPR, and/or first aid may be required as a condition of employment.
    • Additional training and work experience deemed essential by the board of education and administration at the time of hire.

    • Operating and/or riding in a vehicle. Working near active vehicular traffic.
    • Lifting, carrying, and moving work-related supplies/equipment.
