COUNTY OF WARREN

DEPUTY TREASURER I/II

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Performs responsible skilled clerical work assisting with the operation of the Treasurer's Office; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Receiving payments; recording receipts; reconciling accounts; assisting the public.

  • Receives and processes payments for personal property and real estate taxes, sanitary districts, County decals, waste decals, business licenses, dog tags and estimated state income taxes.
  • Answers calls from citizens; answers questions; provides information and handles problems.
  • Counts and verifies cash and checks; balances cash drawer.
  • Checks for paid or delinquent real estate taxes for title companies and attorneys.
  • Assists in mailing real estate, personal property and sanitary district bills.
  • Updates personal property and real estate addresses.
  • Assists with debt set off program; enters and processes bankruptcy information.
  • Performs general office assistance tasks; answers telephone.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Other duties required for the Deputy Treasurer II

  • Assists with the operation of the office; prepares and maintains books, records and ledgers.
  • Checks for paid or delinquent real estate taxes for title companies and attorneys.
  • Collects and audits daily receipts; prepares and submits summary sheets.
  • Processes estimated income and taxable year income accounts; prepares cash sheets and posts to ledger.
  • Prepares bank deposit certificates; balances bank statements; calls banks for investment quotes.
  • Assists in coding bills for escrow accounts requested from mortgage companies.
  • Updates property records; reconciles county records with Virginia Department of Accounts.
  • Totals and endorses checks on check writing machine.
  • Verifies assessment and money received agree; enters data into computer.
  • Assists with adding and deleting of debt set off claims
  • Assists and oversees personnel engaged in the collection and receipt of county and state taxes, fees and charges; performs the duties of a Deputy Treasurer I as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge for the Deputy Treasurer I, and thorough knowledge for the Deputy Treasurer II of the principles underlying the laws, ordinances and regulations governing the operations of the Treasurer's Office; general knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of accounting; some knowledge of business and office practices; ability to analyze and interpret fiscal and accounting data and to prepare appropriate statements and reports; ability to operate standard office, word processing and data entry equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Deputy Treasurer I - Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience involving customer service.

Deputy Treasurer II - Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable clerical experience and some local property tax work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
