QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. Degree
  • Special Education Endorsement

REPORTS TO

  • Director of Special Education
  • Principal

JOB GOALS

  • To give specialized academic, behavioral, and physical training to students with disabilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the classroom.
  • Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other materials, considering factors such as individual needs, abilities, learning levels, and physical limitations of the students.
  • Devises special teaching tools, techniques, and equipment.
  • Evaluates student progress through progress monitoring.
  • Establishes expectations for appropriate student behavior.
  • Counsels and consults with parents and students.
  • Manages materials and supplies.
  • Knows and follows all safety rules and procedures.
  • Maintains necessary records and completes the necessary paperwork to develop and maintain appropriate IEPs.
  • Prepares for assigned classes and shows evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Attends IEP meetings when necessary.
  • Maintains order in classroom and school building.
  • Reports to the Department of Human Services first, and then to the principal when obtaining knowledge that a student's health or welfare has been or appears to have been harmed because of abuse or neglect.
  • Represents the school and the community in a positive manner.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Lifting of objects that may exceed 40 pounds.
  • Carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Lifting of students that may weigh in excess of 100 pounds.
  • Other physical demands may be required as needed.

TEMPERAMENT (Personal Traits)

  • Adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Adaptability to dealing with people in a professional manner.
  • Adaptability to making generalizations, evaluations, or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria.

CAPACITY AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Specific capacities and abilities may be required of an individual in order to learn to perform a task or job duty adequately.
  • Ability to work with students with various disabilities and their parents.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Normal working environment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Ten month year.
  • Salary and work year to be established by Board.

EVALUATION

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
