Waltham Public School District is Hiring a Bilingual (English/Spanish) Grade 1 Long Term Substitute (Aprx. 5/21/2024- TBD) Near Waltham, MA

LTS Bilingual Grade 1 Teacher (English/Spanish) (Aprx. 5/21/2024- TBD) 

Position Summary: The purpose of this position is to have an individual who can provide instruction to students in Spanish and English such that each student will gain the values, knowledge and skills needed to attain his or her full potential. The goals of the dual language program are to develop high levels of proficiency in Spanish and English, help students achieve grade level academic performance in two languages, develop bilingualism, bi-literacy and bi-culturalism, help students to appreciate cultural diversity while maintaining their native languages (English or Spanish), strengthen home connections, and create 21st century global citizens.

Description of Duties:

Management of the Learning Environment

  • Utilizes effective and varied instructional techniques and procedures.
  • Provides a standards-based, student-centered environment in each class taught.
  • Utilizes educational materials properly.
  • Maintains a well-organized classroom.
  • Performs scheduled duties promptly.
  • Fulfills paperwork responsibilities promptly.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service educational activities.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the content area.
  • Understands and implements the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

Teacher/Pupil/Parent Interaction

  • Assumes responsibility for providing a safe, supportive learning environment for every student.
  • Relates well to all students.
  • Provides effective student structure in the total school setting.
  • Accepts responsibility for the well-being of each student.
  • Builds strong relationships with students and parents
  • Contributes to a positive and effective working relationship between school and home.

Professional and Personal Qualities

  • Adheres to the academic, ethical and social standards of the profession.
  • Speaks and writes clearly, understandably and appropriately.
  • Accepts and implements constructive feedback.
  • Uses confidential information for professional purposes only.
  • Is equitable and sensitive and responsive to all learners.
  • Realizes that good attendance is necessary for effective learning.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development, including district-sponsored initiatives. Attends training sessions offered at the District level to support Dual Language classrooms and instruction
  • Aligns instruction to the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks and to departmental syllabi.

Teacher/Staff Relations

  • Shows evidence of helping to promote positive working relationships with school personnel.
  • Demonstrates willingness to share and exchange ideas, skills, techniques and materials.
  • Works effectively with administrative personnel.
  • Accepts and implements school and district decisions.
  • Fulfills assigned duties and out-of-class responsibilities.
  • Complies with school department procedures and school committee policies.

Supervision:

Supervision Scope:

Supervises students and evaluates their achievement.

Supervision Given and Received:

Supervised by principal and/or director.

Qualifications: Qualified applicants must forward cover letter, resume, transcripts, proof of MA DESE license and SEI Endorsement as well as three current letters of recommendation

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Massachusetts Teaching License for Elementary 1 - 6 and dual certification in ESL Pre-K - 6 preferred. Bilingual education and/or Spanish certification is a plus.
  • Advanced academic proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English and Spanish.
  • Teaching experience (including student teaching and internship) at the elementary level and/or in a Dual Language classroom within the last five years.

Knowledge Required:

  • Knowledge of prescribed District curriculum and instructional methods, and utilization of materials within the parameters of the Dual Language program aligned with Common Core State Standards, Massachusetts benchmarks and WIDA standards
  • Effective planning and assessment of curriculum and instruction.
  • Effective classroom management.
  • Effective instruction in a standards-based classroom.
  • Promotion of high standards and expectations for student proficiency.
  • Promotion of equity and appreciation of diversity.
  • Effective integration of technology across the curriculum.
  • Fulfillment of professional responsibilities.

Abilities Required:

  • Ability to employ creative sheltered immersion methods of instruction and utilize a variety of bilingual and/or ESL materials within the structure of the designated curriculum
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet student needs.
  • Ability to administer formative and summative assessments for Dual Language in both English and Spanish and utilize data to improve instruction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, parents, colleagues and administrators.
  • Ability to use designated methods of reporting student progress to parents in both English and Spanish.

  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Skills in the specific subject matter of instruction.
