Summary Manages, supervises, and coordinates the operations of a specific nursing unit by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Must be knowledgeable of general, rehabilitative and restorative nursing and medical practices and procedures and laws, regulations, and guidelines governing long-term care
- Responsible for all care delivered on a unit for 24 hour period, seven days a week.
- Assure complete and accurate transcription for physician order and ensure proper follow through on same orders.
- Responsible for the provision of Nurse and Resident Care Giver (RCG) assignments for all shifts.
- Is a member of the Interdisciplinary Care Planning Team and attends Care Conferences or selects a designee to attend.
- Monitor residents conditions as well as treatments and medications to ensure residents are receiving proper care, review nurses’ notes to ensure proper documentation is maintained
- Assist Medical Records Coordinator and MDS nurses to ensure that Physician and nurse’s documentation is appropriate and timely.
- Assist in evaluating, disciplining nursing services personnel.
- Document and coordinate personnel actions with the Administrator and DON
- Participate in developing, planning, implementing, and as needed, conducting in-service training for nursing services and facility personnel.
- Maintain professional competence, as well as current licenses, through participation in continuing education programs, seminars, and training programs.
- Assist and participate in development for each resident a comprehensive assessment and written care plan that identifies the nursing and medical problems and/or needs of the resident and the goals to be accomplished for each problem and/or need identified.
- Participate in assessing, reviewing and revising care plans as required.
- Assist in developing and monitoring adequate and cost effective measures to ensure that equipment and supplies are properly utilized on the nursing unit.
- Assist the DON in monitoring of reimbursable equipment, pharmaceuticals, and supplies, and make recommendations as necessary to staff to ensure cost-effectiveness of same while ensuring that residents needs have been met.
- Make periodic inspections of supplies and equipment to ensure that adequate levels are maintained and that equipment is available and working properly.
- Assist in planning the Nursing Services budget for equipment, supplies, and labor.
- Attend and participate in the various committees of the facility, not limited to the following;
- Skin committee
- Quality assurance
- Department head meetings
- Nursing Management Team Meetings as needed
- Follow, enforce, and monitor infection control procedures and documentation related.
- Make thorough rounds all residents on the Nursing Unit at least weekly.
- Inspect both residents’ conditions as well as environmental needs in each resident room.
- Instruct and correct staff in areas found in non-compliance during the rounding process.
- Will be required to perform tasks utilizing Universal Precautions.
- Perform other duties as need arises and/or assigned.

Education and/or Experience
Has had at least 2 years of nursing experience some of which included responsibility for supervision of other nursing personnel.
Previous experience in a hospital, long-term care facility, or other healthcare related facility
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must be a Registered Nurse in good standing and currently licensed by the State of Ohio.
