Position Summary

The Adult Education Corrections Instructor reports to the Director of Adult Education. Instruction will be provided to the adult education students that are incarcerated. The instructor will plan, implement, document, and evaluate instructional practices, procedures, and materials. They will also provide direct, on-site daily instruction to assist students in achieving their GED.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides instruction in literacy, adult basic education, GED test preparation, English language acquisition, family literacy, integrated English literacy, and civic education, and integrated education and training at the Cullman County Detention Center and rehabilitation programs in Blount, Cullman, Morgan, and Winston Counties.
  2. Applies research-based instructional practices that incorporate the use of computers and other technologies.
  3. Is knowledgeable of reading, writing, and/or math instructional strategies.
  4. Uses a variety of instructional practices and tools appropriate to the needs of the student.
  5. Uses lesson plans aligned with CCR Standards that integrate instruction across content area.
  6. Provides continuous feedback and adjusts instruction to maximize student learning.
  7. Works with colleagues to develop and evaluate curriculum and materials.
  8. Administers and interprets appropriate placement and diagnostic tests.
  9. Use formal and informal assessment data to monitor and document student progress.
  10. Collects and manages accurate data for program improvement and accountability.
  11. Participates in the retention and follow-up of students.
  12. Maintains knowledge of program regulations, policy, and procedures.
  13. Maintains student records.
  14. At the Cullman County Detention Center: Additional duties may include assisting AE students with job search skills in preparation for the workforce; institutions or training programs; helping students with job search skills in preparation for the workforce; connecting students with support services; and helping students establish career and educational goals.
  15. Comply with all policies of the College, the Alabama Community College System, the Department of Corrections, and the ACCS Board of Trustees.
Qualifications

  1. Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college, required.
  2. Prior work experience in Adult Education program, preferred.
  3. Prior teaching experience, preferred
  4. Prior experience in working with incarcerated individuals, preferred.
  5. Experience working with socially, economically, culturally and/or academically disadvantaged populations,preferred.
  6. Knowledge of AAESAP, preferred.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is equivalent to 7 hours per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. Tuition Assistance
