Job Summary

The Lead Custodian is responsible for the upkeep of facilities while maintaining a supportive and positive atmosphere. The position must maintain a safe, clean, sanitary, welcoming environment for YMCA members. Under general supervision, this position oversees an assigned group of custodians in performing routine and specialized cleaning tasks within pre-assigned areas. This position is responsible to assist the appropriate administrator in overseeing the work requirements of a group of custodians, develop daily work tasks and shift schedules, train custodians, provide needed supplies, solve unusual or difficult problems. This position performs special, and emergency custodial assignments as needed in addition to regular custodial work in assigned areas.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Maintain a well-presented facility with a high level of responsiveness in regards to cleanliness and repair. Report any items needing attention to Facilities Director.
  • Advises management on maintenance issues and projects as requested. Reports and records any incidents or accidents. Completion of equipment logs, repair records and forms.
  • Reports fire, sanitary and safety hazards and the need for repairs to appropriate administrator.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, alarms, graffiti, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and to maintain a functional environment; provides reports as requested to appropriate administrator.
  • Stores and shelves equipment and other supplies in conformance with various local, state, federal, and organization rules and regulations; maintains equipment in a safe operating condition; maintains preventive maintenance procedures, records, and reports.
  • Coordinates the day-to-day work of a group of custodians; ensures that work is completed in a timely manner and in accordance with instructions.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all major cleaning, daily detailed cleaning, and projects are completed on schedule in area of responsibility; inspects and reviews the work of assigned group.
  • Ensures that all cleaning areas are serviced and cleaned when scheduled and unscheduled staff shortages occur.
  • Ensures that custodians start the workday with supplies, equipment, and tools necessary to accomplish job tasks.
  • Assists in training custodians in proper cleaning methods and procedures.
  • Responds to requests for emergency custodial needs and furniture or equipment setups and coordinates special work as required.
  • Moves and rearranges chairs, tables, desks, and other furniture and equipment for special events and facility set-ups, according to specifications and restores to normal conditions afterwards.
  • Assists in custodial duties and floor maintenance as needed such as stripping, waxing, finishing etc.
  • Attends and participates in required training or information sessions; incorporates new information or technology into existing job duties.
  • Maintain required certifications.
  • May require occasional weekend/after-hours work to respond to weather related and/or special events in support of the YMCA.
  • Uphold the YMCA Mission, policies, and programs. Ability to work cooperatively with others in a diverse environment.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the CEO.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Proven time management skills and ability to work independently.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Basic computer skills are essential.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
  • 3-5 years’ experience with maintenance and housekeeping.
  • Must read and produce rough sketches of projects and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must possess a valid, state issued driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and comply with YMCA driving rules to be approved to operate YMCA vehicles.
  • Promotes a cooperative, positive and problem-solving atmosphere at all times and possess good customer service skills; for example, friendly, personable, helpful, patient, professional.
  • Communicate effectively at all levels, a strong commitment and philosophy to quality and customer service, the ability and license to drive, and the ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Possess sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out essential duties which may involve, but is not limited to the following: Stand and/or walk for an extended period of time, climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach overhead, crouch, sit, kneel, shovel, lying on stomach and/or back, carry, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Have finger dexterity and the ability to grasp and perform repetitive motions and operate motorized equipment as needed.
  • Work in narrow and/or confining spaces and in attics, underground, overhead, and at ground level. Ability to erect and work on ladders, scaffolding, lifts and on roofs
  • Ability to work with paint, cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms. Ability to work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
  • Work is performed both indoors and out, and may require travel to various locations. While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time and must work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and be able to communicate using a computer and phone.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
