Waking the Village is Hiring a Live In Caregiver House Director for Young Adult Transitional Program Near Grove, CA

Program Overview: Waking the Village operates programs for youth and children experiencing homelessness. Our hallmarks are building communities where youth and children develop leadership and pursue the goals that ensure healthy interdependence, stability, wellness, and meaningful days. We are seeking a House Director to support community and healthy night and evening rhythms in our housing programs for young parents (18 to 24 years old) and their children.

The House Director is on site from 6 pm through the night and has a private room to sleep in after 11 pm.

Overview of Responsibilities and Duties: Our shelter and our transitional living programs provide safe homes for young adults and young parents, ages 18-24, experiencing homelessness. Six to eight young adults live at each site along with their children. The site we are hiring for in particular will house LGBTQ youth and their families. Each site is full of life as young adults and young parents heal and pursue long term housing while their children fill the house with questions and giggles. The House Director partners with youth to build a warm home culture that nurtures all those living there through traditions, rhythms, and the development of communicative, responsive relationships.
Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, our team of Youth Development Directors are on site to support youth as they pursue their goals.

House Director Duties:

  • Guide youth in meal making, parenting and household management.
  • Partner with youth to create a warm, well managed home environment and resolve conflicts. Our youth are overcoming the impacts of homelessness and learning to manage depression, anxiety, and stress. As young adults, they are also learning how to parent, embrace healthy relationships, maintain a house, and pursue long term goals.
  • Take care of occasional emergencies such as taking expectant mothers to hospital.
  • Guide weekly house meetings to assign chores, plan meals, and address challenges and possibilities within the home.
  • Communicate with day staff in person and in online platforms each day to facilitate the development of a strong team.
  • Attend staff meetings, interviews for potential residents, and other meetings when possible. House Directors are compensated additionally for attending weekly Wednesday staff meetings from 9:30 to 11:30 if they are able.

Hours of Work: Active, paid hours are 6 pm - 11 pm. Sleep hours are from 11 pm to rising. This gives the House Director the freedom to have another job or pursue education. Full time House Directors live on-site and have a private bedroom included with the position.

Between 6 pm to 11 pm, some hours will be in direct engagement with residents as meals are prepared and/or shared, chores supervised, weekly house meetings led, or weekly shopping completed. Some of these hours will simply require the House Director to be on-site and available for support if requested by residents. House Directors may engage in personal pursuits on-site during the hours of 6 pm to 11 pm when residents are not in need of support. If full time, the House Director may adjust their schedule and be off-site in the evenings for occasional personal events through arrangement with the staff.

Sleep hours (from 11 pm to rising) are unpaid. If an emergency arises in the middle of the night, you will be paid for those hours worked.

*Desire to be a part of a work environment where every person supports, encourages, problem solves, and envisions growth together.
*Willingness to embrace and address each day's challenges be they a sick child, a discouraged resident, a troublesome computer, or a dead car battery. We are looking for a director who can solve problems and who addresses needs as they arise, rather than one who simply reports problems.
